A special meeting of the Board of Public Works & Safety was held on Friday, March 15, 1957 at 10:00 A.M.
(CST). All members were present. This meeting was solely for the purpose of awarding bids for various de
partments as follows:

Excavation bonds were approved for Seago Plumbing & Heating Company and John Franklin Lineback & Son.
A letter was received from Carl J. Reinke & Sons, Inc., 1522 West Ford Street requesting permission.to clo�e
the alley at approximately 122 South Michigan Street, north of Newman's Store for a period to July 30, 1957
for the purpose of occupying same for the renovation of Newman's store. Permission granted and the Clerk
of the Board is hereby directed to notify the Fire Department. 1

The contracts for the improvement of Olive Street are hereby accepted and the Board will examine same for
approval at the next regular Board meeting on March 25, 1957. j
Mrs. Harry Vote, 3616 Oakcrest and several others appeared before the Board with reference to the improve-
ment of Logan Street from McKinley to Jefferson Streets. Board hereby informs siad petitioners that in-
vestigations have been made in regards to same and the possibliity of an agreement is being made with the
City of Mishawaka to improve Logan Street.
Mr. William Weaver, 1714 South Twyckenham Drive requested permission to pass out samples of Beech -nut gum
I for 2 weeks in the month of July, 1957. Permission granted subject to Mr Weaver complying with the fact
that he would be permitted only to pass such samples inside buildings and not out on the city sidewalks.

A letter was received from Mrs. Earl E. Krauser, 820 South Bend Avenue pertaining to the D. X.Filling Sta-I
tion located on South Bend Avenue at St. Louis Boulevard, which has filth and trash all about the building,
The Board now authorizes the City Building Commissioner and also the health officer, Richard Podell, to
make investigations at said place.

1 The Fire Chief requests permission to take two (2) official cars and eight'.(8) men to the funeral of the
City of Gary, Indiana Fire Chief. Permission granted.
In response to a prior request of the Board for a representative of the New York Central Railroad System
to attend the Board of Works meeting to show cause why an agreement to keep the tracks at the Sample -
Olive Streets crossing clear during the busiest parts of the day was not complied with, two men, Mr. J. F
Prosser and Mr. J. G. Wheeler appeared. Mr. Wheeler explained to the Board his reason for the delay at
the tracks which was caused by an engine defect. Mr. Wheeler is hereby directed to call a meeting with
Insp. Clem Hazinski in reference to same to work out a solution.
With reference to petitions submitted to the Board regarding the change of bus routes the following route
changes on the Corby and Fellow Street lines were amended to become effective as of March 20, 1957:
Fellow Street - South on Michigan Street to Sample, East to Fellow Street,
South to Ewing, East to Ironwood, North to Fox, West to Twyckenham, South
to Ewing, West.
Corby Street - North on Michigan Street, to LaSalle, East to Hill, North to
Corby, East to Ironwood, North to Rockne, East to Edison, East to Manchester,
South to Preston, South to McKinley, West to Manchester, North.
The bonds for the contracts which were awarded for the construction of Fire Station No. 14 are hereby ap-
proved and signed as of the llth day of March, 1957.
The time now being after 10:QQ A.M. (CST) it was so announced and the bids for the improvements of Pershi
and Campeau Streets were received and opened. Proofs of publication in the South Bend Tribune with an of
davit signed by C. G. Livengood, and properly notarized and in the Record with an affidavit signed by W.
Canio and properly notarized were submitted to the Board and found sufficient.
