A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works & Safety was held on Monday, January 14, 1957 at 10:00
A.M. (CST). All members were present. Minutes of the previous regular meeting were read and approved. j
Claims in the total amount of $89858.15 were approved and ordered paid to the following suppliers:

A letter was received from the City Plan Commission recommending the vacation of Belleville Center Street
from Western Avenue to Washington Street and it was referred to the Engineering Department for further
investigation and preparation of a Vacation REsolution.

Bendix Products Division of Bendix Aviation Corporation submitted to the Board, Schedule Bond No. F-31241'�
by the Fidelity and Casualty Company of New York, indemnifying the City6f South Bend, Indiana and any
unathorized act or ommission by the Special Police Officers' -employed by Bendix Products Division of Bendix;
Corporation. Accepted and placed on file.
A representative of the American Legion Post requested permission to place a booth in front of Robertson's
Department store for their Blue Crutch Sale on the 19th day of January, 1957. Permission granted.
Mrs. Gertrude Rusk, 1518 North Oak Road, appeared before the Board on behalf of the American War Mothers
(Chapter 28) with reference to requesting permission to conduct their annual Carnation Sale on Friday and;
Saturday, May 3 and May 41 1957. Permission granted.

Traffic Engineer, Ernie Miller, reports the installation of the following traffic signs:

Stop signs on Wayne Street at Greenlawn, southwest corner.
Stop signs on Sunnyside at Belmont, southeast corner.
Stop signs on Sunnyside, northwest corner at Bronson Street.
Stop sign on Sunnymede Street, Southwest corner at Greenlawn Avenue.
Stop sign on northeast_ corner of Donald Street at Gertrude Street.

Callix E. Miller, Architect -Engineer submitted to the Board Project No. 5602, Specifications for Fire
Station Number Fourteen (14) for the City of South Bend, to be located at the intersection of Altgeld
Street, Twyckenham Drive and York Road. Notice to bidders with reference to said Fire Station will be •
published on the 18th day of January, and the 25th day of January,1957 and bids will be received on the
llth day of February, 1957.
A letter was submitted to the Board by Judge Olczak with reference to his request that the Board take intro
consideration the possibility of having the traffic signal lights in the vicinity of churches and schools
in our City operated mechanically so that such lights could be arranged that the lights will change not
from red to green directly, but will do so indirectly through the intermediate color of yellow or orange.�J
Letter is hereby referred to the Traffic Engineering Department, and the Traffic Engineer is hereby autho!s-
ized to report back to the Board on the 28th day of January, 1957.
Messrs. Dick Nance and Bob Batters appeared before the Board on behalf of the Indiana Bell Telephone Co.
to request permission to replace the 2 present telephone booths at the corner of Main And Washington Sts.':.! •
with 1 new modern booth. Permission granted. Further, said Compan y requests permission to place a teldr
phone booth in front of the Telephone Company, 307 S. Mains Street. Latter request taken under advisemen
and report will be given at the regular meeting on the 2*h day of January, 1957.
Mr. Richey Whitesell, Bendix Corporation, appeated before the Board with reference to his report on the
progress of noise control at said Corporation. Matter will be continued for 1 month and definite report
will be given tt the regular meeting of the Board on February 28, 1957.
Bernie Bauers appeared before the Board on behalf of the Boy Scouts of America with referenceto request
permission to use the Central , #89 #9, #10, and #13 for Boy Scout elections.
There being no further business to come before the Board the meeting was adjourned at 10:30 A.M. (CST).
The time now being 10:30 A.M. it was so announced and the bids for the Painting of the Interior of the
City Hall were opened. Proofs of publication were submitted to the Board from the South Bend Tribune
with an affidavit signed by C. G. Livengodd and from the Record with an affidavit signed by W. DeCanio j
and found sufficient. The single bid received reads as follows:

The bid will be taken under'a0isement and the contract will be awarded next Monday, January 219 1957. •
