HomeMy WebLinkAbout08/20/1956 Board of Public Works MinutesVACATION RESOLUTION NO. 2845 !j I RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA: That it is de- i sirable to vacate the following: A portion of the north and south alley lying between Chapin and Pine Streets described as follows: Beginning at the NW corner of Lot 14, Erastus Perkins' 2nd Sub -Division of Bank Out Lot 769 South Bend, Indiana; thence south along the east line of the first alley west of Chapin Street 66.04 feet to the northerly line of the New York Cen- tral Railroad Right -of -Way; thence westerly 9.9 f eet to the west line of the ,north -end south alley; thence north along the west line of alley 66.04 feet, more or less, to a point west of the NW corner of said Lot 41; thence east 9.9 feet to place of beginning. The following property may be injuriously or beneficially affected by such vacation: Lots numbered 14, 15, 20, and 21, Erastur Perkins's Sub -Division of part of Bank Out Lot 76, South Bend, Indiana. Notice of this resolution shall be published on the 17th day of August, and on the 24th day of August, 1956 in the South Bend Daily Tribune and The Record. This Board, at its office in the City Hall on the 4th day of September, 1956 at 10:00 A.M. A contractor's bond was approved for Leonard J. Strychalski. Mr. Mielstrup of the St. Joseph County Advisory Board appeared before the Board with reference to re- questing permission to conduct an Indiana Toll Road Dedication Parade on the 17th day of September, 1956. Permission granted subject to said Mielstrup submitting to the Board a proposed plan of the route of the parade on or before September 3, 1956. With reference to the petition of the Northwest Property Owners Association, 1709 Kessler Blvd., South Bend, Indiana which had been previously filed with the Board in 1955, the Board now advised said petitioner. that the request of the installation of street light in daid vicinity had been taken care prior to this dat; in 1956 and the matter before the Board this morning is soled the request for sidewalks. After discussion: of the Board members, they now authorize said Representative of the Association to contact all property i owners to check on the condemnation of a willow tree which is now in the place of the proposed sidewalk area. `A report -will be made at a later date to the Board of Public Works & Safety. l Walter Glass appeared before the Board with reference to a complaint in connection with flood condi- ltion on Mishawaka Avenue from 36th Street to river. Matter taken under advisement by the City Engineer fors ';further investigation and report. • li Captain Trevey, Civil Defense Department, appeared before the Board with reference to request permisslor j to use the Fire Stations as places for passing out literature and taking applications for the Civil Defense "Department during the Civil Defense week which is September 9 through September 15, 1956. Permission granted. i Rev. Uff elman of the Redeemer Lutheran Church requests permission to hold a Street Party on Thursday,! August 23, 1956 from 5 to 10 P.M. on Wall Street between 28th and 29th Street. Permission granted. 1 The letter estimates as submitted to the Board for the removal of trees, stumps and debris on South - ;side of Laporte Avenue from Linden Avenue to Walnut Street, East side of Walnut Street from Linden Avenue if if to Colfax Streets and one large oak located within grounds of City Cemetery were referred to City Engineer.! j A letter was directed to Sandy Thomas, 1217 South Bend, Indiana to appear before the Board with reference . !,to a hearing in connection with a condemnation order. Referring Bids to Engineer------- Improvement Resolution No. 2838 The bids for the improvement of Huron Street from Arnold Street to Webster Street by constructing a local combined sewer received on August 209 1956, in accordance with Improvement Resolution No. 2828, 1956 ;',passed by this Board on July 2, 1956, and confirmed by this Board on August 6, 1956, are hereby referred 'to you for examination and tabulation and to report to this Board with recommendations. After hearing all persons interested who appeared and being fully advised on the premises and the Clerk of the Board having shown proofs of publication of the notices to property owners and the same having been found sufficient, the Board decides that the benefits to the property liable to to be assessed for sai improvement are equal to the estimated cost of the same as reported by the City Civil Engineer, therefore BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of Public Works and Safety of the City of South Bend, Indiana, that Im- provement Resolution No. 28349 1956, for the above improvement, be and the same is hereby in all things co. firmed. First Confirmation August 20, 1956 and the improvement is hereby ordered to be made. The Clerk of the Board having shown sufficient proof of publication and no remonstrators having been filed with the Clerk, it was moved, seconded and unanimously carried that the said Resolution be finally adopted and the said Alley be vacated. Andrysiak City Civil Engineer Improvement Resolution No. 2838 Engineer's Report In the matter of the Bids for the Improvement of Huron Street from Arnold Street to Webster Street by constructing a local combined sewer in accordance with Improvement Resolution No. 2838, 1956, and con- firmed by this Board on August 6, 1956, we hereby report that we have examined the several Bids submitted to the Board on August 20, 1956, and find that the Niles Excavating Company, South Bend, Indian has the lowest and best bid for construction of the improvement. We (Chas. W. Cole & Sons, Engineers) recommend that the Contract be awarded to the Niles Excavating Company. IMPROVEMENT RESOLUTION NO. 2846 ENTRY OF PETITION PRESENTED The Board of Public Works & Safety hereby received and placed on file the Petition of Joe H. Townsen and 13 others for the improvement of South Lake Street from the North line of Jefferson Blvd. to the South j line of Washington Street by constructing a Class "C" pavement (types 1 to 4). Improvement Resolution No. 2846 PETITION REFERRED TO ENGINEER The Petition of Joe H. Townsend and 13 others for the improvement of South Lake Street from the Nort line of Jefferson Blvd. to the South line of Washington Street by constructing a Class "C" pavement (types 1 to 4) is referred to you for investigation and recommendation at the next regular meeting of this Board. IMPROVEMENT RESOLUTION NO. 2846 CITY CIVIL ENGINEERS RECOMMENDATION Referring to the Petition of Joe H. Townsend and 13 others for the improvement of South Lake Street from the North line of Jefferson Blvd. to the South line of Washington Street by constructing a Class "C" pavement (types 1 to 4), the City Engineer recommends that the Petition be granted. IMPROVEMENT RESOLUTION NO. 2846 ORDER TO ENGINEER FOR PRELIMINARY PLANS .According to the recommendation of the City Civil Engineer concerning the petition of Joe H. Townsend and 13 others for the improvement of South Lake Street from the North line of Jefferson Blvd. to the South' line of Washington Street you are hereby directed to prepare Plans, Drawings, Profiles, General Details, !� Specifications, Estimates and the Preliminary Improvement Resolution for improving such part of said stree s by constructing a Class "C" pavement (types 1 to 4).
