The monthly report for February, 1956 for the Building Department was accept- ed and filed. A contractorts bond in the sum of $1000 was approved by the Board for the ISollitt Construction Company. I • A petition was received from Frank Gawenda and others asking for the improve - of lst alley east of Kaley Street between Ford Street and Poland'Street by the constructi n of black topping according to law. Petition referred to the Engineerin& Department. i NO PARKING THIS SIDE signs were installed on: ' South side of Sorin Street from Niles Avenue to St. Joseph River. i Ernest H. Miller, Traffic Engineer, recommended that all applications hereto- fore submitted to the Board of Public Works & Safety for taxi -cab stands be denied. The Board approves Mr. Miller's recommendation. The_ Clerk of the Board was ordered to advertise fora pick-up truck for the I* Traffic Department. 450 1' At the regular meeting of the Council, the followingmatter was referred to the ,!Board of Public Works & Safety for appropriate disposal or for specific action as indicated: A motion was made by Councilman Tellson, seconded by Councilman Glass, that the Board of Public Works have an investigation made of heavy trucks using West Ewing Avenue which is a Boulevard; Councilman Erler amended the motion to include the speeding of trucks and to include Altgeld Street in the in- vestigation, motion seconded by Councilman Glass. Motion carried. Council would like a report on this investigation by their next meeting, March lap 1956. Councilman Christman asked that the Board of Public Works & Safety also include in their investigastion, the bad congestion of traffics► and the condition of the South Shore railroad tracks at the intersection of LaSalle Avenue and Lin - coin Way West, and at LaSalle and Main Street. He suggested that some sort of an island or divider would help the congestion at LaSalle and Lincoln Way West. Both matters were taken under advisement by the Board of Public Works & Safety and the report will be given next Monday, March 12, 1956. A petition was received asking for the vacation of the north -..and south alley be- tween Lots 97 and 98 in part of Lincoln Manor Addition; from the south right of way line;, of Bonds avenue south to the north line of the east and west alley at the rear of said Lots No. 97 and 98 all in the city of South Bend, Indiana and was referred to the City Plan Com- mission for their investigation and recommendation. 1- VACATION RESOLUTION NO. 2828 This being the date set hearing was held on the resolution heretofore adopted b the Board of Public Works and Safety for the vacationof Johnson Street from the north line. of Washington Avenue to the South line of Orange Street, under Resolution No. 2828. The 'Clerk of the Board having shown sufficient proofs of publicstion and no remonstrators ha-_ 1,'ving appeared and no written remonstrances having been filed with the Clerk, it was moved," :seconded and unanimously carried that the said resolution be finall adopted and the said ;street be vacated, providing that the South Shore Railroad warning gates on the south side of Orange Street at :Johnson Street may be removed; the gates on the north side of Orange zStreet at Johnson to remain; that South Shore warning gates and lights should be install- ,ed at the Brookfield -Orange intersection. The Engineering Department is directed to pre — ,pare an assessment roll covering the assessment of benefits and the award of damages to ;the surrounding properties. PETITION REFERRED TO ENGINEER RESOLUTION NO. 2831 The petition of Dean Barnes and 21 others for the improvement of 29th Street from' ;;the south line of Pleasant Street to the North line of Northside Boulevard by constructing a Class 11C" pavement (Types 1 to 4 inclusive) and cement concrete curbs is referred to the' iCity Engineer, for investigation and recommendation at the next regualr meeting of the Board. Cole & Son, Civil Engineers, reported to the Board, Profiles, Draw- ings, Plans, General Details, Specifications, Estimates, and Preliminary Improvement Res; olution No. 2829 for the improvement of Woodlawn Blvd. (Lots 373, 374, and 375 only) fran the existing manhole at Lot #372 to Inglewood Place by constructing a local combined sewe;p. The Board approved the reports and passed Improvement Resolution No. 2829, authorizing these improvements and the 26th day of March, 1956 at the hour of 10:00 A.M. as the time, and the office of the Board in said City as the place, when and where all persons whose property may be affected by such proposed improvement, may be heard, and all petitions and remonstrances, received and the Board will, on said day, decide whethe the benefits accruing to abutting and adjacent property, and to the City of South Bend, Indiana, will be equal to or exceed the estimated cost of said improvements. The Clerk of the Board is hereby ordreed to give notice by two weekly publications, of the time an place of hearing of this resolution, adopted on this 5th day of March, 1956 and to be pu lished on the 9th day of March and the 16th day of March, 1956 There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was ad journed at 10:40 A.M.
