M. C.S.T., Friday, November 26, 1954, Members present were R. S. Andrysial and I. A. Hurwich. The Board examined an itemized repair proposal, submitted by the Municipal Supply Company, and it was the consensus of opinion that the proposal of a maximum cost of 2410.85 per sweeper for repairing this equipment is in order. The Board, however, directs Street Commissioner, H. M. Tomlinson, to assign his departmentis chief mechanic to personally inspect the parts, as each sweeper is torn down, -in order to determine jwhich of the parts are to be retained for reinstallation and which are to be replaced i by new parts. There being no further business for consideration, the Board, thereupon adjourned; the time being 10:30 A. M. Reinke & Sons, contractors and builders, presenting drawing and blueprints of new building to be occupied by the Osco Drug Company adjacent to the Sherland Building, requesting the required permission to occupy a 150 foot portion of the alley in the rear for necessary storage of materials and for the use of the sidewalk in front of the location, supplying a plank walk with required lighting, throughout the period of. construction. The Board examined the plans and took note of failure to include construction of new cement walk in front to replace old and defective sidewalk. After some discussion, the Board granted approval for the contractor's use of the alley and sidewalk, as requested, contingent however, upon the agreement -to provide new sidewalk to and including curb for this thirty-three foot frontage. Next appeared H. G. Wheeler, General Yardmaster, New York Central Railroad, explain- ing to the Board orally and supplying also a written report on the cause for the "tie-uprt of the Olive and Sample Street crossing, from 1:10 p.m. to about 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 19, 1954. The explanation, clearly showing an occurrence beyond the control of the trainmen involved, was deemed satisfactory and accepted by the Board. Then appeared a representative of Mercury Motorways, Inc., again requesting tem- !'porary use of Louise Street by their trucks for the period during which regular routing ;;cannot be used due to the interceptor sewer river crossing construction presently under ",way in this area. It was pointed out that the Street Departmentfs best efforts to main- itain the dirt street now serving, fails to keep it passable, and. -serious breakage and !;damage to the equipment of the truckers serving this terminal, is resulting. The Board, accordingly, grants temporary use of Louise Street until river -crossing con- `struction is completed. The Board further ordered signs to show "No Parking" are to be iposted on the east side of Louise Street. The Board next examined copy of letter from Cnnsoer, Townsend & Associates, con - engineers, under date of November 27, 1954, addressed to the Mayor, in connections ;;with the Turnpike crossing of the.site of the Sewage Treatment Plant, and directed that ''this matter be placed in the hands of Attorney Russell C. Kuehl with instructions that !'he forward to the Turnpike attorneys a letter setting forth the City's position. �1 Considerable discussion then took place concerning the urgency to get accounting arrangements set up for the Sewage Treatment Plant, and to secure the "on the job" ser- vices of the individual to eventually have charge of operations, with a view to his obtaining the best possible understanding of the entire project in all details. RESOLUTION ADOPTING FINAL ASSESSMENT ROLL RESOLUTION NO. 2793 - 1954 After hearing all persons interested who appeared and the Clerk of the Board of j 'Public Works and Safety having proofs of publication of the notices to property owners '!and the same having been found sufficient, therefore BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of Public Works and Safety of the City of South Bend, ,Indiana, that :the Primary or Preliminary Assessment Roll adopted by the Board on the 1.5th day of November, 1954, for the improvement of Hawthorne Drive from lot 137 in Jefferson Heights Addition (unrecorded) to McKinley Avenue by constructing a local sewer, Ibe and the same is in all things confirmed. At the suggestion of Councilman, Chester Muszynski, the Board directed Traffic Engineer, E. H. Diller, to investigate the feasibility of establishing "No Parking" for either side of the 600 block of South Walnut Street, from the New York Central crossing to Ford Street. A Resolution On Railroad Crossings, undated, passed by the delegates to the I! St. Joseph County Industrial Union Council, C. I. 0., was examined and ordered filed.
