HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/25/1954 Board of Public Works Minutesi 114 January 25, 1954 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held Monday, January 25, 1954, at 10:00 A. M. Mr. J. A. Bickel was absent. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Salary claims in the amount of $27,908.50 were approved. Claims of the following suppliers, in the amount of $534.54, were approved and ordered paid: Business Systems, Inc. John W. Gorney South Bend Window Cleaning Co. Indiana Bell Telephone Co. Ziegler, PM. 15.00 10.80 Office Supply & Equipment Co. 3.82 First appeared before the Board, Mrs. Carl Leippert, representing the Daughters of Union Veterans, requesting permission to conduct their annual flower sale April 24th on the downtown streets and at the factory gates. No conflicting funds solicitation having been granted by the Board for the date indicated, the Board granted the request of this organization. The Board then took up the matter of the weather-stripping and repair of windows of the City Hall. It was agreed that before proceeding with this work, it would first be necessary to enclose with glass the switchboard operatorts station in the City Hall lobby to establish, uniform regulation of the thermostat. This step was conceded to be the first requirement to realize any benefit from a weather-stripping job. The Clerk was directed to secure quotations from three or more contractors for the building of the required glass enclosure. VACATION RESOLUTION NO. 2768 - 1954 RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA That it is desirable to vacate the following: THE FIRST ALLEY NORTH OF NORTH SIDE BOULEVARD FROM ROBERTS STREETS EAST TO THE WEST LINE OF THE SEVEN FOOT HALF ALLEY EAST OF ROBERTS STREET. The following property may be injuriously or beneficially affected by such vacation: Lots Numbered 52, 53, 54, and 55, in Baker and McHenryls Addition Notice of this resolution shall be published on the 29th day of January and on the 5th day of February, 1954 in the South Bend Tribune and the Tri-County News. This Board, at its office in the City Hall on the 15th day of February 1954, at 11:00 A. M. will hear and receive remonstrances from all persons interested in or affected by these proceedings. HURWICH Board of pubTlc 'Works & Safety TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT: Traffic Engineer, E. H. Miller, being present, considerable discussion next was given to matters pertaining to his department. The Engineer brought to the Boardts attention the heavy flow of vehicular traffic west bound on LaSalle Avenue during -peak morning and evening hours and recommended the elimination of parking and stopping on the north side of LaSalle Avenue, between Hydraulic Avenue to Main Street from 6:00 A.M. to 9.00 A.M. and from 3:00 P. M. to 6:00 P. M., Monday through Friday. The Board approved the Engineerts recommendation. The traffic regulation, being found to conflict with temporary cabstand assigned to the South Bend Cab Company, the Traffic Engineer recommended their immediate notification that this cabstand must be vacated during the prescribed hours, granting them permission, however, to park at stand immediately prior to arrival of South Shore trains and during such time as LaSalle Avenue, at this point, is temporarily blocked by the unloading of passengers. The Board approved the recommendation. Traffic Engineer, E. H.'Miller, recommended to the Board the installation of S-T-O-P signs at the following locations, and such installation was so ordered by the Board: Milton Street at St. Joseph Street Huron Street at Gladstone Street Kemble Street at Ewing Avenue Calvert Street at Kemble Avenue Next appeared before the Board, Chief Electrical Inspector, Herbert Harrison, bringing to the Boardts attention the urgency for certain electrical work at the City Hall, specifically the locating of two main "feeders" and the proper adjusting of the distribution centers to eliminate any possible fire hazard. Inspector Harrison estimated the cost would be possibly as much as $3500.00. The Board directed the Inspector to prepare the required specifications for the legal advertising and directed the Clerk to proceed with the advertising as soon as the specifications are available. Excavatorts Bond in the sum of $2000.00, binding Robert H. Hamilton and Clifford Hamilton, d/b/a Hamilton Bros. Co., as principal, and Indiana Bonding and Surety Company as sureties, was next examined and approved by the Board. There being no further business to come before the Board,the meeting adjourned at 11:00 A. M. Attest: Clerk.
