HomeMy WebLinkAboutSpecial Purchase - Sherwin Williams - Compatible Paint for Century Center Skylight Steel BeamsNOR MORP Pali @9 wlllljilil—�� Century Center Skylight Tubular Steel Paint Indiana Code 5-22-10-8 allows a purchasing agent to make a special purchase when the compatibility of equipment, accessories or replacement parts is a substantial consideration in the purchase and only one source meets the City's reasonable requirements. We request the Board to approve the purchase of Skylight Tubular Steel Paint as a Special Purchase under IC 5-22-10-8 as justified below. In 2009 and 2012, the Century Center remodeled two exterior entrances, the main (west) entrance on MLK Blvd. and the (south) entrance from the parking lot. As part of these projects, the existing skylight tubular steel was prepped, primed and painted. Painting of all of the rest of the skylight tubular steel at the Century Center is currently out to bid. A quote for the same paint used on the previous projects was obtained by City Engineering from Sherwin Williams for the Century Center so that all of the paint will match in color and not risk getting some other "non -matching, non -compatible" paint for this project, and to avoid a contractor mark up cost. Included with this request is the paint quote, paint specs, photos of the two entrances painted skylight tubular steel and a blueprint used on the south entrance with a description of how to and what paint to use on the skylight tubular steel beams. The funds to purchase the paint are from Hotel Motel Tax account 7304-42010-000-0099 Thank you for your consideration of this request. Rusty galvanizing requires a minimum of Hand Tool Cleaning per SSPC-SP2, prime the area the same day as cleaned. Previously Painted Surfaces - If in sound condition, clean the surface of all foreign material. Smooth, hard or glossy coatings and surfaces should be dulled by abrading the surface. Apply a test area, allowing paint to dry one week before testing adhesion. If adhesion is poor, additional abrasion of the surface and/or removal of the previous coating may be necessary. Retest surface for adhesion. If paint is peeling or badly weathered, clean surface to sound substrate and treat as a new surface as above. Recognize that any surface preparation short of total removal of the old coating may compromise the service length of the system. APPLICATION PROCEDURES Apply paint at the recommended film thickness and spreading rate as indicated on front page. Application of coating below minimum recommended spreading rate will adversely affect coating performance. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Refer to the SOS sheets before use. PERFORMANCE TIPS No painting should be done immediately after a rain or during foggy weather. When using spray application, use a 50% overlap with each pass of the gun to avoid holidays, bare areas, and pinholes. Apply coating evenly while maintaining a wet edge to prevent lapping.
