M. --All members were present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Salary claims in the amount of $272385.76 were approved. Schumaker, representing petitioners who have requested the construction of sidewalk on West Washington Street at Chestnut, appeared before the Board and stressed the urgency that this matter be taken care of before school opens this September. Mr. Schumaker stated that trucks frequently park in the path where sidewalk should be con- structed, forcing the pedestrian traffic, mainly school children,-intokiazardous area. He also stated that in his opinion, the rear of signboards in this location should be lighted. Mr. Schumaker was advised by the Board that the matter is receiving their attention and it is believed the property -owners gill install the desired sidewalk upon some further urging on the part of the Board. Next appeared before the Board, Tvb?. R..W. Wolfram, presenting a blue -print for the Boardts examination, and requesting permission to put a three-foot canopy, extending from an office building, which is one -foot in from the property line, thereby making the canopy extend two -feet out from the property line. Permission was granted by the Board, provided the height clearance meets with Building Department requirements. This office building is located at 1315-17-19 Mishawaka Avenue. The Board awarded the contract for the re -surfacing of Chapin Street from the South line of Washington Avenue to the Northwesterly line of Prairie Avenue, to the Rieth-Riley Construction Company for the total sum of $80,969.00. A letter was received from the City Plan Commission indicating that they a rove the petition of Edwards Iron Works for the vacation of the south twelve feet of pWest Woodside Street adjacent to Edwards IronWorks, AND The petition of C. Harry Swanson, Inc. for vacation of East- Washington Avenue from the east line of Tuxedo Drive, east a distance of 130 feet t o the west line of Lots numbered ninety-six (96) and ninety-seven (97) in Swanson Park Fourth Addition to the City of South Bend, AND The petition of I. H. Wilson and .H. F. Smith to vacate the alley from High Street to Studebaker Golf Course, alley bisects block between Donald and Fox Streets, subject to Utility easements and Public functions. The above petitions were referred to the Engineering Department for further con- sideration. PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS ADOPTED RESOLUITION NOS. 2677, 2716, 2717, & 2719 BE IT'RESOLVED, by the Board of Public Works and Safety of the City of South end, Indiana, that the Profiles, Drawings, Plans, General Details, Specifications and stimates approved by this Board on the 12th day of May 1952, for the improvement of BULLA STREET from the west line of Portage Avenue to the west line of Pdedora treet, south by constructing a Class "C" Pavement AND FELLOWS STREET from the south line of Ewing Avenue to the north line of Altgeld treet by constructing a Class 110 Pavement AND 11 VASSAR AVENUE from the east line of Olive Street to the west line of Elmer Street. by constructing a Class "C" Pavement AND 1 ALLEY BETWEEN ADAMS STREET AND COLLEGE STREET from the north line of Humboldt .Street to the south line of east and west alley north of Humboldt Street by constructing is Class 110 Pavement. Each bidder for said work shall enclose with his bid a certified check, payable to the Treasurer of this City in the sum• of two and one-half percent of the amount of his bid, or a bid bond for two and one half per cent of the amount of his bid, to insure the execution of this contract, if said work is awarded to him. The Clerk of this'Board is hereby ordered, to give notice by two weekly publicat ons of. the time and place, when and where bids will be received, opened and considered for the construction of said work. Tomlinson, Street Commissioner, being present, brought the attention of the Board the fact that the weed -cutting season has arrived. He was informed by the Board that the Tribune has publicized the usual warning to property owners in this connection and that the Street Department should proceed to remove noxious weeds, particularly on corner lots, where view is obscured and traffic hazard is being caused by such growth. PARKING METER DEPARTMENT: Casimir Dzikowski, Superintendent of the Parking Meter Department, was present. A study of various makes of parking meters has been completed at the request of the Mayor. The committee making the study was comprised of City Engineer, Ray S. Andrysiak, and two other highly competent mechanical engineers, who conducted tests of six makes of parking meters Independent investigation was also i made by the Parking Pieter Department and members of the Common Council. It appearing that the Rhoades "Mark -Time" meter was the most desirable, insofar as the tests were concerned, and from the standpoint of simplicity of mechanism and economy of maintenance and repair, the Board, upon recommendation of the Testing Committee, authorized the Parking Meter Department to obtain one -hundred of the Rhoades meters for a 90-day trial. i i The Superintendent brought to the attention of the Board the Departmentts need for a three -wheel motorcycle, as used by the Police Department, and the Board authorized the Parking Meter Department to purchase one of the three -wheel motorcycles from Wesner's, 526 Western Avenue, at the price of $250.00. This being the time set for the opening of bids, chairman of the Board, Ray S.
