A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Monday, April 71 1952
at 10:00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of the previous meeting (regular)
and also Special Meeting were read and approved. Salary claims in the total amount
of $25,207.28 were approved. Claims of the following suppliers, totaling $212752.032
were approved and ordered paid:

Rev. R. F. Porte of the Ardmore Brethren Church appeared before the Board and
obtained the Boards s permission for a sextette of musicians from Moody Bible Institute
to sing in the business district one evening of their choice the week of April 14, 1952.
STREET DEPARTMENT:
Street Commissioner, Harry M. Tomlinson was present and asked the Boardts per -
'!,mission to close his department, with the exception of a skeleton emergency crew, for
the purpose of a general vacation from July 3rd to July 14th. It was pointed out
(this is the period adopted for this purpose by major local industrial plants. Mr.
;ITomlinsonts recommendation and request was approved by the Board and the Board authorize
,a general -vacation for the Street Department, commencing with the evening of July 3rd
and extending to July 14, 1952.
• Mr. Irving A. Hurwich presented to the Board an Ordinance authorizing the sale of
the dwelling units, owned by the City, located on the Plaza Site of the South Bend
Veter.anst Housing Project, also the appointment in the St. Joseph County Circuit Court
jIof appraisers to appraise this property, signed by Judge Dan Pyle under date of
'IMarch 24,.1952• Mr. Hurwich then presented the Appraisement, showing the appraisals
,!were fixed at $850.00 each for 3-bedroom units, and $650.00 each for 2-bedroom units.
:!The Board then agreed upon the sale of the twenty-three (23) units involved to be made
1,1by public auction for not less than the appraised value, at a date to be decided upon
1 and announced in another meeting.
Mr. Hurwich then took up the matter of the trial re-routing of certain bus routes,
;which was given discussion in the previous regular meeting of the Board. The Board
Jwas in agreement and granted the request for the re-routing in question.
DEDICATION:
The next matter taken up by the Board was the dedication of a portion of FORD
Street extended, as certified by Garden Homes, Inc. -
Beginning at a point 850t South of the Northwest corner
of the Southwest One-fourth (1/4) of Section Nine (9)
Township 37 North, Range 2 East, corresponding to the
intersection of the West line of said Section and North
• line of Ford Street; thence in a Westerly direction
along the North line of Ford Street, a distance of 1277.1
J feet to North boundary line of Belleville Unit i'D" Addition

thence in a Southeasterly direction a distance of
40 feet to centerline of Ford Street; thence in a
Northeasterly direction along centerline of Ford
Street a distance of 185 feet; thence in.a South-
easterl� direction a distance of 40 feet to the
intersection of North line of Scenic 'Drive and South
line of Ford Street; thence in an Easterly direction
along South line of Ford Street a distance of 1071.59
feet to West line of Section 9, Township 37 North, Range 2
East; thence North along said Section line a distance of
80 feet to place of beginning.
The Board approved the Dedication of the extended street, above described, for
the purpose and use of a public highway, and directed the Clerk to proceed to have

Following the reading and examining of the Bids, the Board announced that
the bids would be tabulXated to determine the lowest and best bids, the bidders
to be notified of the results within the week, and thereupon referred this work
to the engineering firm of Wilbur H. Gartner & Associates.
A letter signed by Fellow Street property owners, with reference to the
paving of Fellow Street, between Ewing Avenue and Altgeld, dated April 1, 1952,
and a letter from Peter Eckrich & Sons,Inc. of Fort Wayne, Indiana with reference
to sewer construction at their premises in South Bend, dated April 2, 1952, were
both referred to the City Engineer for study and report.
A Contractor's Bond for Gafill Oil Company was examined and approved by the
Board. -
Excavation Bonds for Sollitt Construction Company, Inc., and Colpaert Realty
Company were examined and approved by the Board.
STREET DEPARTMENT:
Rental Equipment Agreement for the use of the Street Department flusher on streets,
under the direction and maintenance of the State Highway Commission, duly signed and �I
dated March 26, 1952,was received and ordered filed.
TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT: !i

Ernest H. Miller, Traffic Manager, was present and called to the attention of the
Board, the Road School to be held at Purdue University, April 14th to April 17th i •
inclusive. Mr. Miller asked permission of the Board for his attendance at this school
on these dates. Permission was granted.

SUPPLEMENT TO APRIL 7th, 1952 MEETING
The Board authorized advertising for bids on April 11 and April 18, 1952
for constructing a Bituminous Concrete (AH) Re -surface Pavement on ANGELA BOULEVARD
from the west line of Lafayette Boulevard and from the easterly line of Woodward
Avenue to the easterly line of Portage Avenue, AND
for constructing a Bituminous Concrete (AH) Re -surface Pavement on INDIANA
AVENUE from the west line of Miami Street to the west line of Marietta Street.
