December 31, 1951
A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Monday, December 31, 1951
at 10:00 a.m. All members were present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and
approved. Salary claims in the amount of $14,655,86 were approved and ordered paid.
Claims of the following suppliers in the amount of $22,198,37 were approved and ordered
paid:

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: Ernest Miller, Traffic Engineer, was present and matter
pertaining to his department were discussed.
ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: Excavation Bonds were approved and ordered filed for William H.
Burke & Robert H. Burke; Arthur W. Deppert; Balbina Perkins d/b/a Harry D. Perkins Co.;
W. W. Sibley & 'W. P. Sibley d/b/a Sibley Heating and Plumbing Company; and Victor Trippe
C. Harry Swanson, Inc., by Mr. Floyd Searer appeared at the meeting and filed an
amended petition for the vacation of certain streets. The Board ordered that the amend-
ed.petition be sent to the City Plan Commission for t heir investigation and recommenda-
tion.
VACATION RESOLUTION NO. 2694-1951
This being the date set, hearing was held on the assessment roll showing the award
of damages and the assessment of benefits in the matter of vacation of the alley running
north and soVith from Western Avenue to Monroe Street between Columbia Street and Carroll
Street excepting the north 99 feet of said alley under Vacation Resolution No. 2694.
In the above named assessment roll, no remonstrators appeared and no written remon-
strances were filed, the Clerk of the Board submitted proofs of publication of notices
and same were found sufficient, and the Board, therefore, finds that the several lots a.
parcels of land have been benefited and damaged in the amounts shown on said roll. The
Board, therefore, decided to take final action on said assessment roll and declaressame
in all things ratified, confirmed and approved without modification and the proceedings
closed and portion of alley vacated upon receipt of the amount of benefit assessments
from the various property owners so benefited and all proceedings had with reference to
said alley vacation are hereby sustained.
VACATION RESOLUTION NO. 2696-1951
This being the date set, hearing was had on the resolution heretofore adopted by the
Board of Public Works for the vacation of a portion of Columbia Street described as
follows; Commencing at a point on the west line of Columbia Street at a point'134 feet
northeasterly at right angles from the northeasterly line of Lincoln Way East; thence
southeasterly across Columbia Street on a line projected southeasterly to the east line
of said Columbia Street and which line before projection southeasterly is 134 feet north
easterly at right angles and parallel to the northeasterly line of Lincoln Way East;
thence north along the east line of Columbia Street to the River's edge; thence northwes
ly along the River's edge to the west line of Columbia Street; thence south along west
line of Columbia Street to place of beginning; said vacation being subject to all ease-
ments now existing and inuring to the benefit of Public utilities operating in the City
of South Bend under Vacation Resolution No. 2696. The Clerk of the Board having shown
sufficient proofs of publication and no remonstrators having appeared and now ritten '
remonstrances having been filed with the Clerk, it was moved, seconded and unanimously
carried that the said resolution be finally adopted and the said portion of street be
vacated. The Engineering Department is directed to prepare an assessment roll covering
the assessment of benefits and the award of damages to the surrounding properties.
SEWAGE DISPOSAL: Mr. Ora Parker filed a remonstrance against the blocking by the Fattor
Company of North Shore Drive and Pleasant Street during the construction of his contract
of the intercepting sewer system. This remonstrance was referred to the City Engineer.
STREET DEPARTMENT: Melton 0. Brannan, Street Commissioner, was present and matters per-
taining to his dep artment were discussed.
CEMETERY DEPARTMENT: Stanley Leszczynski, Sexton, was present and matters pertaining to
his department were discussed.
There being no further business to come before the Board the meeting was adjourned
at 11:15 a.m.
