SPECIAL MEETING
July 24, 19 1
A Special Meeting of the Board of Public Works wgs called on Tuesday, July 24, 1951
at 2:00 p.m. All members were present.
The meeting was called for the purpose of signing contracts between the City of South
Bend by and through its Board of Public Works and Safety and Mancini & Ventrella for the
construction of the Hydraulic &LaSalle Avenues Sanitary and Storm Sewers.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned
at 3:30 p.m.

A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held Monday, July 30, 1951 at
9:30 a.m. All members were present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and ap-
proved. Claims of the following suppliers in the amount of $1,911.69 were approved and
ordered paid:

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: Ernest Miller, Traffic Engineer, was present and matters
pertaining to his department were discussed.
Mr. Frederick Elbel appeared before the Board to present a request for a 'traffic
signal at 'Ploodlawn and Portage Avenues. Mr. Miller discussed this request to some length:
and the Board informed Mr. Elbel that a study would be made of the situation, but a traf
fic signal would probably not be installed this year.
Mr. Stephen Lebiedzinski appeared before the Board representing the residents on
Kaley Street and requested that sign be placed on Kaley Street prohibiting trucks. The
Board directed Mr. Miller to install said signs.
Mr. Knoop, representing Mercury Motors, appeared before the Board to discuss, the
use of Louise Street by the t rucktrailers operated by his company. Mr. Knoop informed
the Board that they were using Louise Street because North Side Boulevard was blocked for;'
the installation of the Intercepting Sewer System and as soon as North Side Boulevard is
opened,for traffic, they will again use that as an exit from their property.
ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT.- Contractorts Bonds were approved and ordered filed for George S,
Cressy; Louis R. Demeter; Harold Hansen; D. E. Hodges; Harry G. Mills; S-L-A-B Construc-
tion Company, Inc.; and Al Tomaszewski & Sons.
Cosette Benbow appeared before the Board to request permission to install a canopy
from the driveway of 216 South Lafayette Boulevard, approximately 14 feet across the side
walk to the curb. This was to be a permanent canopy. Permission was denied.
The Board approved plans for the construction of a permanent type canopy extending
2 feet from the building on the northeast corner of South Michigan and Dayton Streets
for the Taylor Construction Company.
