Home My WebLink About07/09/1951 Board of Public Works MinutesMr. Bert Liss was called to witness by the r emonstrators. Mr. Liss testified that he was the owner of the Indiana and South Bend Cab Companied, that he .has operated a cab company in South Bend since 1928, that he has 36 licenses for the South Bend Cab Company and 19 for the Indiana C€b Company, that he is not able to operate his entire fleet of cabs at all times because there is not enough business to keep them going, that he at times operates 20 or 25 in the South Bend Cab Company, and 15 to 18 in the Indiana Cab Company. He further testified that his oldest and most experienced men get 49% of their gross earnings. • The Board asked for an idea of what his men earn and he presented some of the pay slips which showed that for 63 hours work one man earned $60; for 63 hours - $61.89; 66 hours $68.60; 66 hours - $65.00; 60 hours $70.00, etc. He further testified that his cabs operated twenty-four hours a<;day,_that he maintained three free phones from down tov where people may call for cab service, that he keeps all of his eqa ipment in good service and that he has had no complaints from the general public, about the quality or quantity. of his service. The only complaints he has had have been during severe rain s-torms or other bad weather, and then, other means of transportation are comparable with his. Statistics were introduced to compare the number of taxicabs in use in South Bend with relation to population as in other cities. Mr. Sands cross examined Mr. Liss. • , The following witnesses, were called for the remonstrators: Mrs. Alice Smith, 1134 Bryan Street, George Buscis, 2344 Dixie Way North, Orville Fansler, 727, Juniper Place; Rudolph Kramer, 528 Monroe Street and Mr. Alfred Brown, 2250 North Brancis Road, all of South Bend, Indiana, who testified as to the number of calls they answered, the length of time it took to relay a call after it had been received by the dispatcher, the averagE earnings made by each driver, the time off they had to take if there were too many cabs on the streets, the calls they missed because another cab would get to their passenger first and other questions regarding service to the public. These witnesses were cross examined by Mr. Sands. Mr. Sands then produces records showing the number of building permits issued in y • i South Bend and St. Joseph County for new dwellings within the last year, contending i that these were all potential taxi cab users. Dear Madam: Yours of May 1 ordering the Grand 'Trunk Western Railroad Company to install an over- head street light at the grade crossing..of the Grand Trunk Railroad at 30th Street in South Bend. This is to advise that this light was installed on June 1, 1951. Yours truly, W. L. Dayton Signal Engineer. ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: A Contractorts Bond was approved and ordered filed for H. G. CTMistman Cons rue ion Company, Inc. Belleville Lumber and Supply Company was given permission to erect a fence along the property on the west side of Niles Avenue from Colfax Avenue south to Heckts Addition. This fence is to be located 30 inches in from the property line of .the curb. Permission was, also, granted for a driveway opening, located on Washington Street and not to exceed 30 feet in width. United Air Lines was granted permission to house *ithin the well -house in the air- port, equipment for their VHF radio installation according to a sketch submitted to the Board. 'I A letter was received from the City Plan Commission indicating that they approve !the vacation of the alley west of Main Street from Donald Street to Ewing Avenue.
