A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Monday, April 30, 1951s
at 9:30 aim. All members were present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and
l�approved. Salary claims in the amount of 26,123.79 were approved and ordered paid. Cl

TRAFFIC.. ENGINEERING: Ernest Miller, Traffic Engineer, was present and matters pertain -

Mr. Miller was granted permission to go to Grand Rapids to study parking situations.;;

The Board approved stop signs on Jefferson Street at Maple Street, both sides; Hill
top Road at York Road, northeast corner; Southeast Road at York Road, northeast corner;and
Dunham Street at Bendix Drive, Both sides.
A petition was received requesting the elimination of truck and semi -trailer traffic;
Ion Meade Street from Western Avenue to Sample Street. This was referred to Mr. Miller
• Ifor investigation and report.
;ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: Contractorst Bonds were approved and ordered filed for Harry
Allison d b a Allison Contractors Company; Irvin E. Keiter; and Jesse D. Matthews, Inc.
Mrs. Andra Brower, 134 North Kenmore Street presented a petition containing forty-
Ifive signatures to close the dumping area in the neighborhood of Falcon and Dundee Streets.
jThe Board directed that a letter be sent to the Place Construction Company, owners of the,l
'above named property, informing them of the said complaints, and the Board further, direct'
led that the Place Construction Company on or before May 7, 1951, notify the Board as to
;what steps they will take to remedy the existing conditions in the dumping area.

VACATION RESOLUTION NO. 2660
This being the date set, hearing was held on the assessment roll showing the award
of damages and the assessment of benefits in the matter of vacation of CHERRY TREE LANE
;from the west line of Ironwood Drive to the west line of Morris Country Club Addition,
190 feet long by 60 feet wide under Vacation Resolution No. 2660.

is In the above named assessment roll, no remonstrators appeared and no written remon-
• istbances were filed, the Clerk of the Board submitted proofs of publication of notices
;hand same were found sufficient, and the Board, therefore, finds that the seveial_lots-andi
';parcels of land have been benefited and damaged in the amounts shown on said roll. The i
i Board, therefore, decided to take final action on s aid assessment roll and declares same
lin all things ratified, confirmed and approved without modification and the proceedings
closed, and the street vacated upon receipt of the amount of benefit assessments from the;
various property owners so benefited and all proceedings had with reference to said street
vacation are hereby sustained.

(RAILROADS: A memo was received from the City Clerk's office calling the Boardts atten-
tion to the condition of the grade crossings at Calvert, Indiana, Ewing, Olive and Sample
Streets. They, also, called attention to the traffic snarls caused by -switching opera-
tions. The Clerk of the Board was directed to write letters to the New York Central;
Grand Trunk Western and the Pennsylvania Railroad informing them of the above complaints
and directing them to remedy the situation. The railroads were also notified that arrest
would be made where trains, in switching operations, block crossings for more than the
alotted time, as stated in the City Ordinances.
STREET DEPARTMENT: Melton 0. Brannan, Commissioner, was present and matters pertaining
to his Department were discussed.
CEMETERY DEPARTMENT: Stanley Leszczynski, Sexton,,was present and -matters pertaining to
his department were discussed.
There being nolfurther business to come before the Board, the Meeting was adjourned
at 11:00 a.m.

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING: Ernest Miller, Traffic Engineer, was present and matters pertain-
ing to his department were discussed.
i Mr. Miller was granted permission to go to Indianapolis on business connected with
I� the traffic signals.
Mr. Miller discussed, with the Board, plans for one-way traffic in downtown South
• ( Bend; Williams Street to have south bound traffic one-way and Lafayette Boulevard to
have north bound traffic, one-way. Complete plans and details are being worked out.
RAILROADS: Letters were received from the Grand Trunk Railway System and the Pennsyl-
vania Railroad indicating that they will check the conditions of their grade crossings
in South Bend and make such repairs as necessary. They will also handle the matter of
4 blocking street crossings with the train crews to eliminate crossings being blocked for
i excessive periods of time.
