VACATION RESOLUTION NO. 2659
R. S. Andrysiak, City Engineer, filed primary assessment roll showing the awards of
damages and the assessments of benefits in the matter of the vacation of the FIRST EAST -
WEST

In the above named assessment roll, the Board hereby orders that it will meet in
the City Hall at 10:00 a.m. C.S.T., on the 7th day of May, 1951, for the purpose of heart;
ing and receiving remonstrances from all persons interested in or affected by said vaca-!
tion, and the Board further orders that notice of said hearing, together with the amount1`
of damages awarded and benefits assessed be addressed to the property owners by publish-'
ing same on the 20th day of April and on the 27th day of April, 1951, in the South Bend r
Daily tribune and the Weekly Record.
STREET DEPARTMENT: Melton 0. Brannan, Street Commissioner-, was present and matters per-
taining to his Department were discussed.
CEMETERY DEPARTMENT: Stanley Leszczynski, Sexton, was present and matters pertaining to'',
his Department were discussed.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned
at 11:15 a.m.

A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Monday, April 23, 1951
at 9:30 a.m. All members were present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and
approved. Claims of the following suppliers in the amount of $3,690.410 were approved

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING: Ernest Miller, Traffic Engineer, was present and matters pertain-
ing to his Department were discussed.

Mr. Miller informed the Board that 6000 lumen lights had been installed on Olive
Street, South of Fisher Street; Sample Street, East of Olive Street; and on Sample Street
at the New York Central Railroad, a part of the cost of which is to be paid by the New
York Central Railroad, The Grand Trunk Western Railroad, and the city to illumina#a the
grade crossings at Olive and Sample Streets.
The following letter was written to the State Highway Commission:

Dear Mr. Hadden:
Referring to our letter of February 27, 1951 in regard to one-way streets; we wish
to state that the city of South Bend is agreeable to the proposed changes in re-routing
of State and Federal traffic as discussed and agreed,upon tentatively by your Director
of Traffic, Norman Schafer and our Traffic Engineer, ErrB st H. Miller, at a meeting in
Indianapolis, Friday, April 20. 1951.
We understand that State and Federal traffic as a result of this meeting will be re-
routed as follows:
U.S. 20 traffic that ordinarily travels south on Lafayette Boulevard will be reroute
east on LaSalle to Main Street, south on Main Street to Colfax Avenue and then east on
Colfax Avenue.
State Route 23 traffic that ordinarily travels south on Lafayette Boulevard will be
jre-routed south on Michigan Street to Western Avenue then west on 1.%'estern Avenue followin
'present established routes.
State Route 2 traffic that ordinarily travels south on Lafayette will be re-routed
straight east on Western Avenue to Michigan Street, south on Michigan Street to Monroe
Street, then east Mtn Monroe Street following present established routes.
The one block of Main Street where U.S. 20 traffic will be re-routed is included
in a contract let by the City of South Bend a few weeks ago for resurfacing Main Street
between LaSalle Avenue and Western Avenue. ,r'lork on this street is scheduled to start ar
the 23rd of May.

BOARD OF PUBLIC VVERKS & SAFETY
ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: Contractor's Bonds were approved and ordered filed for Walter
Skiles; Charles R. Bowen, Sr.; Gafill Oil Company; Charles Osterhold; Charles Snyder;,
and Desire Versl ype of Mishawaka.
The Board approved plans for the improvement of Carroll Street from Chippewa to Sher
wood Avenue.
A petition was received asking for the vacation of the alley west of Michigan Street
and est of Main Street from the north line of Navarre Street to the south line of the
first alley north of Navarre Street in Bartletts lst Addition. This was referred to the
City Plan Commission.
Permission was granted to Ham the Wrecker to occupy the north and south alley at
the, rear of 119-121-123 North Michigan Street, while the building is being razed:
