Mr. Ernest Miller was authorized to attend the Indiana Traffic Engineers Association to be held August 9, 10 and 11 in Evansville, Indiana. The Board approved the installation of the following stop signs Elwaod Avenue at Olive Street, northeast corner. Laurel Street at Thomas Street, both sides Gladstone Avenue at Ford Street, both sides Hollywood Place at Lathrop Avenue, both sides Carroll Street at Calvert Street, both sides ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: Contractorls Bonds were approved and ordered filed for Donald C. James; JohnT. Weaver; and Robert Whittaker. Vacation Resolution No. 2641 This being the date set, hearing was held on the assessment roll showing the award j of damages, and the assessment of benefits in the matter of Vacation of Alley between St. Peter Street and St. Louis from Howard Street to the north line of alley south of Howard and the first alley south of Howard from St. Peter Street to west line of lot Numbered 1114 under Vacation Resolution No. 2641. i! 1 • • • 0, • 161 �In the above named assessment roll no remonstrators appeared and no written remonstrances; ;were filed, the Clerk of the Board submitted proofs of publication of notices and same Ijwere found sufficient, and the Board, therefore, finds that the several lots and parcels Hof land have been benefited and damaged in the amounts shown on said roll. The Board approved plans for the Beverly Place Sewer from manhole 335.6 feet north of Oakwood to new manhole 186 feet north. The Board approved improvement plans for North Edison Avenue from Washington Street Ito Linden Avenue; and, Birchwood Avenue for the Colpaert Realty Corporation. A petition was received for the improvement of Kendall Street between Donald and jEwing Avenue by the construction of a pavement. Messrs. H. Armstrong, D. L. Powell and F. Schaible, representing the U. S. Gypsum s ' !Company, appeared before the Board in accordance with a request from the Board requesting !their appearance. They were called in to answer complaints filed by the residents adjacent • to their plant, concerning gas fumes and mica particles in the air. After a full discus- 'sion, the Board was given assurance that steps would be taken to correct the escaps;ing of!' !gas fumes and mica particles from the chimneys of said company. �s - h ENGINEER'S REPORT Nos. 262 , 2627, 2634, 2 37,& 2638 - 1950 ' I, i I� August 7, 1950 j The Board of Public Works & Safety City of South Bend, Indiana • '!Gentlemen: In the matter of the Bids for the improvement of MCKINLEY AVENUE from the east line of Eddy Street to the west line of Walsh Street in accordance with Improvement Resolution No. 2626, 1950, AND POPLAR STREET from the west line of Cleveland Avenue to the east line of the alley west of Cleveland Avenue in accordance with Improvement Resolution No. 2627, 1950, AND ALLEYS BETZEEN CALVERT, DONALD, SCOTT AND TAYLOR STREETS in accordance with Improvement ! Resolution No. 2634, 1950, AND �� 162 THIRTY-THIRD STREET from the south line of Mishawaka Avenue to the south line of Pleasan Street in accordance with Improvement Resolution No. 2637, 1950, AND KENDALL STREET from the north line of Donald Street to the south line of Calvert Street in accordance with Improvement Resolution No. 2638, 1950, passed by this Board on June 7,2, 1950, and confirmed by this Board on July 10, 1950_ V_e hereby report that we have examined the several Bids submitted to the Board on July 31, 1950 and find that the Riet Riley Construction Company has the lowest and best bids for a Class "C" Type 1, Cement Concrete Pavement , that all bids on other types of pavement were over the engineer's es timate (excepting No. 2634 - no bids received on other types of pavement). Brannan: You are herewith notified that all new employees of the Street Department of the City of South Bend must hereafter take a physical examination from Dr. H. H. Slc City Doctor of South Bend, Indiana. Please instruct Doctor Slomins];:i that a report of each examination must be mailed to you so that you may have the available information before you in considd.ring employment of new personnel. ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: Contractor's Bonds were q)proved and ordered filed for Joseph Kuharic and Robert R. Nelson, d/b/a K & K Concrete Block & Excavating Company; Harry H. Verkler; and Carl J. Reinke and Son. An Excavation Bond for Joseph Kuharic & Robert R. Nelson, d/b/a K & K Concrete Bloc & Excavating Company in the amount of $5,000.00 was approved and ordered filed. Excavation Bonds in the amount of $1,000.00 were approved and ordered filed for George E. Sibley Company; and Alex R. Niezgodski d/b/a Niezgodski Brothers Plumbing Com- pany. Reverend ln:illian H. Harris representing the Pilgrim Baptist Church, owner of proper- ty at 120 North Birdsell Street appeared before the Board as per request. Reverend Harri was notified that he must have the property as mentioned cleared of its occupance by August 28, and was asked to report to the Board at that meeting. A letter was received from the City Plan Commission indicating that they do not reco mend the vacation of the alley north of Longley Street from Johnson Street to the first alley east of Johnson and the first alley north of Longley from Brookfield to the first alley west of Brookfield. The Clerk of the Board was directed to so notify the petitioners,, A petition was received asking for the vacation of the alley north of Western Avenue from Franklin to the west line of the alley west of Lafayette Boulevard.
