A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Wednesday, May 31, 1950
at 9:30 a.m. All members were present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and
approved. Salary claims in the amount of $27,964.10 were approved and ordered paid.

Gentlemen:
In the matter of the, Bids for the Improvement of CT
�ICAGO STREET from the 150 feet
north of the north line of Western Avenue to the ,center line of Washington Street in ac-
cordance with Improvement Resolution No. 2630, 19,50, AND
CHICAGO STREET from the center Line of Washington Street to the center line of Linden
Avenue in accordance with Improvement Resolution No. 26311 1950,rAND
WARREN STREET from the center line of Indiana Avenue to 150 feet north of the north line
of Prairie Avenue in accordance with Improvement Resolution No; 2632, 1950 passed by the
Board of Public Works and Safety on .April 24, 1950 and confirmed by said Board on May 9,
1950. We hereby report that we have tabulated and examined the several Bids submitted to
the Board on May 22, 1950 and find that the Niles Excavating Company, Niles, Michigan has
the lowest and best bids.

Therefore Be It Resolved, By the Board of Public Works and Safety of the City of
South Bend, Indianathat the bids of Niles Excavating Company, Niles, Michigan for the
construction of the improvements described in Irovement Resolutions Nos. 36, 26319
and 2632, 1950 passed by this Board on April 24mp1950,and confirmed by this Board on May
91 1950 be and the same is hereby accepted and that the City of South Bend, Indiana. thru
its Mayor and Board of Public Works and Safety enter into a written contract with said
Niles Excavating Company for the faithful execution of such work, according to said bids
the detailed plans and specifications and the terms of said Resolutions, provided that
before entering upon the performance of said,contracts, said Niles Excavating Company,
Niles, Michigan shall give bonds, in the amount equal to one hundred (100) per cent of
the contract price for such work, with a Surety Company legally authorized to transact
business in the State of Indiana, as Surety,.to the approval of this Board, to secure
the performance of such -contracts, and to hold the City of South Bend, Indiana, harmless
from payment of any debt or damage by reason.of any act of such Contractor, and to secur,
the payment of all claims for labor and material used in such -improvements.

week ending May 27, 1950.
STREET DEPARTMENT:_._ Mr. Melton 0. Branna, Street Commissioner, was present and matters
pertaining to his Department were discussed..
CEMETERY DEPARTMENT: Mr. Stanley Leszczynski, Sexton, was present and matters pert
to his Department were discussed.
There being no further business to come before.the Board, the meeting was adjourned
at 11:00 a.if.

A special meeting of the Board of Public Works was held Wednesday, May 31, 1950 at
7:30 p.m. Mr. Frank J. Bruggner was absent. The meeting was called for the purpose of
public hearings on Improvement Resolutions:
No. 2623 GLADSTONE AVENUE from Ford Street to Sample Street
No. 2624 Cn CAGO STREET from Western Avenue to Ford Street
No. 2625 KENI-40RE STREET from Western Avenue to Ford Street
No. 2628 ALLEY BETWEEN MCKINLEY AVENUE AND LASALLE AVENUE to the west line of
Esther Street
No. 2629 VASSAR AVENUE from the east line of Wilbur Street to the east line of
Lai-mdale .Avenue
Property otimers whose property is effected by the above resolutions will have a ten
(10
) day period in which to file remonstrances against the improvement resolutions.
