Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved Salary claims in the amount of $26,557.04 were approved and ordered paid. Mr. Miller presented plans for traffic control islands to be located at the inter- section of Lindsey Street, Portage Avenue and La Monte Terrace and the Clerk was author- ized to advertise for bids for same. RAILROADS: The following letter was sent to the Grand Trunk Western Rail Road: BUSSES: Grand Trunk Western Railroad, Freight Agent, 326 West South Street, South Bend, Indiana. Dear Sir: The Board of Public Works and Safety has received numerous complaints concerning the switching of rail road cars on the Grand Trunk railroad tracks at the Sample and Olive Street crossing especially during the hours of 3:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon when the traffic is particu- larly heavy due to the men leaving factory jobs at that hour. Will you please check into this matter and see what can be done to eliminate this condition. The following letter was received from the Common Council: Council Muszynski made a motion to request the Board of Public Works and Safety to contact the Northern Indiana Transit, Inc to give greater courtesy to the public on the part of its bus drivers and that busses: stop at all corners. Councilman Niezgodski made an amendment to the motion that the bus company see that curbstones are cleared of ice and snow and that the drivers be made to pull up next to the sidewalk. • • 0 • • • 5 • • 0 • Councilman Tellson seconded the motion. Motion carried. The Board requested that a letter be sent to the Northern Indiana Transit Co., Inc. asking that a representative of their Company be present at the next regular Board meet- ing on December 12th to discuss matters concerning the said Company. ENGINEERING: An Excavation Bond in the amount of $1,000.00 was approved and ordered filed for Howard H. White. The following letter was received from the United States Gypsum Company: "Since meeting with the Board of Public Works and Safety, we have undertaken an extensive investigation relative to the presence of mica resulting from our South Bend Plant operation. `A complete investigation of our dust collection system disclosed an obstruction under the cyclone in the duct system. We have removed this obstruction and are con- fident that you will find this system working to your complete satisfaction. It s/ Harry M. Armstrong The Board directed that a letter be sent to W. S. Moore, Engineer, requesting him to make a survey of the Pinhook Park Lagoon to ascertain whether or not pollution is still present. "The Board of Public Works and Safety is asking herewith that you make a survey of the Pinhook Park Lagoon, some time during this month. We are partucularly interested in knowing whether or not the pollution is still present, and what might be done to eliminate this condition." VACATION RESOLUTION No. 2610 This being the date set, hearing was held on the assessment roll showing the award of damages and the assessment of benefits in the matter of vacation of : 1. The first East-West alley South of Linden Avenue from Falcon Street Westward to the center line of Section 9, except where the North and South alleys cross. 2. The first East- West alley North of Colfax Avenue from Falson Street Westward to the center line of Section 9, except where the North and South alleys cross. 3. Colfax Avenue from Falcon Street Westward to the center line of Section 9, except where the North and South alleys cross, and except the eighteen (18) center feet to be used as a public alley. 4, The first East-West alley South of Colfax Avenue from Falcon Stree6 Westward to the center line of Section 9, except where the North and South alleys cross.5.The first East-West alley South of Washington Street from Kaley Street Westward to the center line of Sectio; 9, except where the North and South alleys cross. 6. The first East-West alley South of Jefferson Street from Bendix Drive Westward to the center line of Section 9, except where the North and South -alleys cross. NOTE: "Section 911 as referred to above is Section 9 of T. 37 N. R. 2 E. of the 2nd P. M. under Vacation Resolution No, 2610, In the above named assessment roll, no remonstrators appeared and no written rem- onstrances were filed, the Clerk of the Board submitted proofs of publication of notices and same were found sufficient, and the Board, therefore, finds that the several lots an parcels of land have been benefited and damaged in the amounts shown on said roll. The Board, therefore, decides to take final action on said assessment roll and declares same in all things ratified, confirmed and approved with the following modification: The easements existing now adjacent to Lots 1019 and 1085 shall be reserved and remain as, they were prior to the vacation and the proceedings closes, and the alleys vacated upon receipt of the amount of benefit assessments from the various property owners so benefit and all proceedings had with reference to said alleys vacation are hereby sustained. The Board approved plans and specifications for a`sewer on Addison Street from Jennings Street to Klinger Street for the Whitcomb -Keller Company. Whitcomb and Keller presented the Board with a Quit -claim deed for a tract of land sixty,(60) wide to be used as a street to be known as Addison Street. This deed is filed prior to the dedication of the street to allow the sewer project to start. The Clerk was directed to advertise for bis for the resurfacing of East Jefferson Street from Niles Avenue east to Eddy Street and the resurfacing of Washington Street from Main Street West to Chestnut Street. Bids to be returnable on December 27, 1949. IMPROVEMENT RESOLUTION No. 2591 STATE OF INDIANA. ) ) S S': COUNTY OF ST.JOSEPH ) IN THE MATTER relating to the Improvement made under Improvement 6� Resolution No. 2591, 1949 and the plans and specifications therefor comes now Lee A. Rieth who being duly sworn upon oath deposes and says he is acquainted with the Rieth- Riley Construction Company the party to whom was awarded the contract and who performed ,the work under Improvement Resolution No. 2591, 1949. That he is familiar with and personally knows the requirements of the plans and specifications of said improvement resolution and further knows that the said Rieth- Riley Construction Company in the performance of said work complied with all the terms and conditions of said plans and specifications in every partucular, and that the materi used was of the character, kind, quantity and quality required therein and according to under the direction of the Board of Public Works and Safety. The general character of the Improvement, the street, alley, or public place on which it has been made, and the terminal points thereof, are as follows: THIRTY SECOND STREET from the north line of Pleasant Street to the south line of Vine Street, by draining, grading and paving the roadway with a Class "C" Type LF pavement.
