A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Monday, May 23, 1949 at
9:00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approve

TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT:____Mr,-Ernest Miller, Traffic Engineer, was present and matters per -
Raining to his department were discussed.
The Traffic Engineer requested permission to install four way stop signs on an ex-
• 1permintal babis at the following street intersections: Ewing and Main Streets, Ewing and!
Fellows Street; Ewing and Miami Streets and Ewing and Twykenham Streets. The Board ap- II
proved the installations and if they prove satisfactory they will be retained.
RAILROADS'.
The board directed that a letter be sent to W. L. Dayton, Signal Engineer, of the j
Grand Trunk Western Rail Road instructing the Rail Raod that pursuant to the unanimous
lagreement of the Board the Grand Trunk Western Railroad is asked to erect a short arm j
automatic gate at the grade crossing at Ironwood Drive.
ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT l
• An Excavation Bond in the amount of $2,000.00 was approved and ordered filed for
JJ, A. Currie.
Contractor's Bond in the amount of $1,000.00 was approved and ordered filed for
Herron Murray, Francis Snider, K & K. Construction Company, John F. Brooks and George,
Solomon, and Howard D. Taylor.
A petition to vacate and alley west of Vernon Street was filed by the Whitcomb and
Keller Company, Inc., was referred to the City Plan Commission for investigation and
report,

For the improvement of Stanfield Street under Improvement Resolution No. 2585, 1949,
dopted April 25, 1949, from the South line of Howard Street to the North line of Corby
treet by draining, grading and paving the roadway with a Class C Pavement, Types One (1)
to Five (5) inclusive.
After hearing all persons interested who appeared and being fully advised in the
remises, the Board decides that the benefits to the property liavle to be assessed for
• said improvement are equal to the estimated cost of the same as reported by the City
,civil Engineer. Therefore
Be It Resolved, By the Board of Public Workd and Safety of the City of South Bend,
ndiana, that Improvement Resolution No. 2585, 1949, duly passed by this Board on April

Indiana, that the Profiles, Drawings, Plans, General Details, Specifications and Estim-
ates approved by this Board on the 25th day of April, 1949, for the improvement of
Stanfield Street from the South line of Howard Street to the North line of Corby Street
by draining, grading and paving the roadway with a,Class "C" pavement, Types 1 to 5
inclusive, be and the same are hereby adopted and ordered placed on file in the office
of the Department of Engineering of this Board.
June 8th, 1949 at the hour of 10:00 A. M. C'.,S. T. is hereby fixed as the time,
and the office of the Board of Public Works and Safety in the City Hall of this City
as the place, when and where the Board of Public Works and Safety will open and conside
bids for the above named improvement, provided all bids for the construction of said
works , shall be filed in the office of the Clerk of this Board before 10:00 A. M. of sai
day. Each bidder for said work shall enclose with.his bid, a certified check, payable
Treasurer of this City in the sum of two and one-half (22) per cent of the amount of hi
bid or a bid bond for two and one-half (22) per cent of the amount of his bid to insure
the execution of this contract, if said work is awarded to him.
The Clerk of this Board is hereby ordered to give notice by two weekly publica-
tions of the time and place, when and where bids will be received, opened and considers
for the constructionof said work. Said Clerk shall state in said notices, that each
bidder shall enclibse with his bid, a certified check or bid bond for the above named
amount, to insure the execution of this contract.

South Bend, Indiana, on the 6th day of June, 1949, at the hour of 10:00 A.M.C.S.T.
at the office of the Board, in the City Hall, in Said City, will open and consider .
sealed bids, and designate by preliminary order the kind of pavement to be used, for _
the following described Street Improvement, as provided for in Improvement Resolution
No. 2585, 1949, duly passed by said Board on April 25, 1949 and May 239 1949 respect-
ively, to -wit: Stanfield Street from the south line of Howard Street to the north line
of Corby street by draining, grading and paving the roadway with a Class "Cit, pavement,
Types 1 to 5 inclusive.
Provided, all bids for the construction of said work, shall be filed in the, Offic
of the Clerk of the Board of Public Works and Safety of said City before 10:00 A.M,C,S.
of said day.
Each bidder for said work shall enclose with his bid a Certified check payable to

office of the Board of Public Works and Safety in the City Hall of this City, as the
place, when and where the Board of Public Works and Safety will open and consider bids
for the above named improvement, provided all bids for the construction of said works
shall be filed in the office of the Clerk of this Board before 10:00 A.M.C.S.T. of said
• day.' Each bidder for said work shall enclose with his bid, a certified check, payable
to the Treasurer of this City in the sum of two and one-half (22) per cent of the amount
of his bid or a bid bond for two and one-half (22 ) per cent of the amount of his bid to

• Notice is hereby given, that the Board of blic Works and Safety of the City of
South Bend, Indiana, on the 8th day of June, 194-q, at the hour of 10:00 A.M.C.S.T. at
the office of the Board, in the City Hall, in Said City, will open and consider sealed

bids, and designate -by preliminary order the.kind of pavement to be used, for the follow
ing described Street Improvement, as provided for in Improvement Resolution No. 2595, 19'
duly passed by said Board on April 25, 1949 and May 23, 1949 to -wit: Hamden Court from
the North line of La Salle Avenue to the South line of Alley north of La Salle Avenue by
draining, grading and paving the roadway with a Class C pavement, Types One (1) to Five
(5) inclusive.
Provided, all bids for the construction of said work, shall be filed in the office
of the Clerk of the Board of Public Works and Safety of said City before 10:00 A.M.C.S.T.
of said day.
Each bidder for said work shall enclose with his bid, a certified check payable to
the Treasurer of said City, in the sum of two and one-half (21) per cent of the amount
of his bid or a bid bond for two and one-half (21) per cent of the amount of his bid, to
insure the execution of Contract, if said work is awarded to him.
Detailed plans and specifications for said improvement are on file in the office
the Department of Engineering.

MEOW Notice is hereby given, that the following Street Improvement has been completed.
The general character of the Improvement, the street, alley, or public place on which
it has been made, and the terminal points thereof, are as follows: Kosciuszko Street
. from north line of Sample Street to the South line of Dunham Street, by draining, grad
and paving the roadway with a Class "C" Type One (1) Pavement.
There is on file in the office of the City Controller of said City an assessment
roll with the names of the owners and description of property subject to be assessed wi
the amount of the prima facia assessment, and can be seen in the office of said City
Controller.
The Board of Public Works and Safety of said City, at the office of the Board in said
City, will on the 6th day of June, 19'9 at 10:00 A. M. C..S.T. receive and hear remon-
strances against the amounts assessed against their property respectively, on said roll,
and will determine the question as to whether such lots, or tracts of land, h,&*6 been
