A petition was received asking for the installation of a traffic signal at Beyers, Avenue Longfellow Street and Mishawaka Avenue. This was referred to Mr. Miller for investigation and report. ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: The Board approved plans for the grading and paving of Illinois Street from the South property line of Ford Street to the North property line of Sample Street. it A petition was received asking the Board to condemn an area for the purpose of ex- tending and improving West Calvert Street from Kemble Avenues West through said area to Prairie Avenue. This was; to be discussed further before any action was taken. STREET DEPARTMENT: Mr, Melton 0, Brannan= Superintendent, was present and matters pertaining to his department were discussed. A letter was received from the St. Joseph Young Men's Society authorizing the use of a lot adjoir4ing. their clubhouse at 408 South Grant Street, as a playground for the,youungsters in that community, for a period of one year. The Street Department was authorized to grade said lot. Mr. Brannan talked to the Board at some length about the condition of the streets of the City and the steps his department has taken to maintain them. He also explained various methods his department has been using to clear the streets of parked cars at night so the streets can be cleaned, swept and flushed. Mr. Brannan informed the Board thatcthe new buildings were nearing completion and are very satisfactoryt but that they will not house all of the Street Department equipment and material. He feels that the Street Department should have two more buildings similar to those just erected so all equipment can be kept under cover. No action was taken however. 0. .7 0 • 0 0 0 505 PARKING METER DEPARTMENT: Mr. Maurice C. Vennet, Auditor, presented his report for the week ending May 7, 1949. CEMETERY DEPARTMENT:____._Mr,.__StanlEy-Lesczcynski, Sexton, was present and matters per- taining to his department were discussed. ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: An Excavation Bond in,the amount of $2,000 was approved for Percival Hines, d/b/a • Haines & Haines and an excavation Bond for William Lodyga in the amount of $1,000 was approved. Both,Bonds were ordered filed. Contractor's Bond in the amount of $1,000 were approved and ordered filed for: George Newman, D. B. Skeeters d/b/a Skeeters Construction Company, Peter Schumaker, Harry A. Sthrol, Herman F. Glaser, V. E. Disher & Sons, Harold Hansen, Luther Wing Rimer. There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 10:00 A. M. The Board authorized the rental of a painting machine owned by the Traffic Depart- ment to a private concern for a sum of $2.50 per hour, when the machine is not needed* for use in the Traffic Department. I ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: A Contractor's Bond in the amount of $1,000 was received and ordered filed for ;Harry Barnes. A petition was received requesting the vacation of part of an alley east of Vernon Street and running north from Dubail Avenue to the N. Y. C. righ-of-way ill+ feet. This was discussed but no action was taken.
