Mr. Balka informed the Board that an offer had been submitted by the Chicago, South Shore and South Bend Railroad to lease the land formerly owned by the City and used by the City Street Department, for a period of one year from August 1, 1946 to July 31, 1947 for the sum.of 1,,!,�p400.00. The Board accepted the offer. CEVIETERY DEPARM11ENT: 11r. Stanley Leszczynski, Sexton, was present and matters per- taining to his department were discussed. Ernest Miller, Traffic Engineer, was present and matters per- taining to his apartment were discussed. 1:1r. Muller was authorized to go to Indianapolis on August 14th and 15th to discuss matters with the State Highway Commission. BUS ROUTES: Yr, Sid H. Cohen, a representative of Studebaker Union, Local -No. 5, came before to ask for a change in the bus routes. The busses now proceed South on LaFayebte Boulevard to Sample Street, ;'lest on Sample Street to Franklin Street and South on Franklin Street. The proposed change is to proceed South -on LaFayette Boul- evard to Broadway, '."lest on Broadway to Franklin and South on Franklin. The change is asked because of the traffic conditions on Franklin. -_Street which is a narrow street and the inability of busses to enter and leave Franklin Street to and from Sample Street when the heavy traffic is moving through this intersection from the factories. The Board, upon receiving a written request from the Indiana Transit Company, will approve the change as indicated. ENGINEERING DEPARTIFIETT: A Contractor's bond was approved and ordered fildd__for the C. A. 7ordazi Company. An Excavation bond was approved and ordered filed for Fred Spromberg, The Board directed the Clerk of the Board to advertise for bids for thepaving of Hamilton Street returnable on the 3rd day of September, 1946. Notice is hereby given by the Board of Public :forks of the City of South Bend, Indiana, that sealed proposals will be received by it, at its office in the City Hall on the 3rd day of September, 1946 at 11:88 A.1i. for the following described public improvement: Improvement Resolution No. 2548 for the paving of Hamilton Street from the West line of Portage Avenue to the `:-lest line of Brookfield Street. All work done in the making of said described public improvement shall be in accordance with the temis and conditions of the improvement resolution, as numbered, and the detail plans, profiles, drawings and specifications which are on file and may be seen in the office of the Board of Public Forks, City Hall, South Bend, Indiana. The bidders, in submitting proposals to make said described public improvement must accompany each bid with a certified check in the sum of not less than 10 o as evidence of good faith that the successful bidder will execute, within ten days from the acceptance of proposals, contracts and bonds satisfactory to the said Board to do the work of making said improvement. A failure of the successful bidders to enter into such contracts and bonds upon the acceptance of such proposal will forfeit the • • • • • 267 • r1 U • n U the checks and the sums of money payable thereon to the city as agreed as liquidat ed damages for such failure. The Board of Public '_7orks reserves the right to reject any and all bids. Balka turned over to the Board a check in the amount of ;,p234.63 from the H. D. Lee 1VIercantile Company for road oil and asphalt. A form of contract between the Board of Public Works and Safety and Andrew A, Toth for preliminary services in connection with general,structural and mechanical plans for erecting a new one-story structure for the City Street Department was approved by the Board and it was directed that the Board should execute such con- tract upon its execution by Mr. Toth and submit it to the Common Council for ap- proval. BUS ROUTES: '.7ritten requests were received from the-_,orthern Indiana Transit Company for a-90 day trial service of routing the Rura Village Bus line South on LaFayette Street to Broadway, ':'lest on Broadway to Franklin Street, South on Frank- lin Street to Indiana Avenue and return via same; also -routing the Rum Village bus line East on Calvert Street to Kendall Street, Norte on I"-endall to Indiana Avenue, East on Indiana avenue to Franklin Street, thus discontinuing the use of Chapin Street ,Frhich is na_•rotir. The Board granted permission for the 90 day trial run, which, if successful, is -to be permanent. The Northern Indiana Transit Company also presented :written requests for additional bus service on an experimental basis for a 90 dw period beginning September 28, 1946 as follows: Olive Street, which is located approximately one-half mile,west of Mash Street is a north and south street in direction and is not provided with bus transportation, the proposed experiment is to operate the base schedule of the Rug. Village line every fifteen minutes :rest on Indiana Avenue to Olive Street, then South on Olive Street to Prairie ;Ivenue then Northeast on Prairie Avenue to various other streets that are now followed to the Court House; Also Belleville Gardens which is located approximately one-half mile west of Sheridan Street on Sample Street is not provided with bus transportation, the proposed experiment is to operate the base schedule of the ;Western Avenue bus line every fifteen minutes west on Semple Street to Belleville Gardens and return to Sheridan Street, the residents of Belleville Gardens to provide proper facilit- ies for the turning of the buses at the terrainus of the line. The Board approved this additional service and stipulated that if the 90 day experiment proves succ- essful the run should be permanent.
