Home My WebLink About04/03/1944 Board of Public Works Minutes150 SPECIAL MEETING - MARCH 31, 1944 A special meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on, Friday, March 31, 1944. All members were pre -sent. The meeting was called to award a contract, the Board having been notified, of z the approval of a special appropriation, Ordinance #3478, by the State tax. Board, the Board now accepts the bid of O. R. Robertson for the repair of the Jefferson Boulevard Bridge, the'bid being in the opinion of the Board the lowest and best bid. The Clerk of the Board was authorized to notify Mr. Robertson to call at the office' of the Board to execute the contract, and to notify him to proceed with construction, The Clerk was also authorized to return the bid bonds and checks to the unsuccessful bidders and to return the successful bidders check alter the contract is executed. All members ,,sere present. Minutes of the last meeting and of the Special meeting held on March 31, were read and approved. The Clerk of the Board was authorized to re -advertise for a Tractor for the Street Department, all bids having been recieved as a result of the last advertisement having j been rejected. ENGINEERING DEPARTI;IENT: Excavation bonds were approved for the Solitt Construction Com- pany and Ernest Longway. These were ordered filed. Mr. C17Tde Villiams, City Engineer, presented a copy of a letter written to Mr. A. Farabaugh, Attorney for the Ne;� York Central RailCompany, calling his attenti I( to the reco=endations of the TrL.ffic Engineer on signals for the Heade Street crossing, �) the Traffic Engineer's report and recommendations were enclosed with the letter. Mr. 1,4iilliams also submitted to the Board a report on the petition for the elimin- ation of a pond between ';Jashington and '11arshall Streets and 25th and 26th Streets. The I report in part states, ' The area is considerably lower than the established grade of th, abutting streets and would provide an ideal location for a City dunp. This would pro- vide a means -of filling the area, as rea_uested by the petitioners. However, the lots are privately owned and it is doubltful teat the o-uners would be interested in this meth od of filling their property. In addition, it is very libel- to create objections from neighboring property owners and citizens. Until the property owners in the genBral area petition for a trunk sewer on Jefferson Blvd., from 26th Street to Logan Street, the- draining; of this area will remain an impossiblity. The trunk sewer that will even- tually drain this area now terminates at 26th Street on Jefferson Blvd.' A copy of 11 Mr. adilliams report was sent to iir. J. ik . !-'cCarthy. bn I� I,Ir. G. R. Robertson was present at the m;leetin- to sign the oontrL..ct for the repairs l to the Jefferson Street Bridge. The contract was signed by 1VIre Robertson and his pay=the Mr. Julius Stevens, and their certified check was then returned to there. The Engineering Department is directed to prepare an assessment roll covering the benefits and damages to the surrounding property. The Board approved the proposed annexation to South Bend of the tract 360 feet by 810.4 feet adjacent to Ridgedale 4th Addition, after receiving the approval of the City Plan Commission. Mr. ada.tterson and T,ir. Hann, Offic'_als of the ltiorthern Indiana Transit Company, appeared before the Board and requested permission to change the routes and, schedules of the Beacon Heights Housing Project. Tentative approval was granted subject to receiving their plans of the proposed routes and schedules. Mr. Jos. Roper, Assistant City Attorney, was authorized to obtain a property list of the properties beneficially or in juriousl7T affected by the Chippewa Avenue conderl- nation. 11r. J. H. Kelsey- and Mir, George Riley were appointed appraisers.
