HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/18/1943 Board of Public Works Minutes124 ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT. A Contractor's Bond in the amount of $1,000.00 was received for Charles W. Aulm. This was ordered filed. The following letter was approved by the Board of Public Works: Honorable Mayor and October 9, 1943 Members of the Common Council South Bend, Indiana Gentlemen: Undoubtedly you have noticed the deck over the -east -arch of the Jefferson Street bridge. The deck has settled considerably and indicates that the.bridge has settled. We have maintained a constant watch over this bridge during the last five years, and instrument readings on the underneath side of the arch, do not indicate a variation other than that normally expected due to temperature changes. However, recently indications are such that undue stress is being placed on the steel in the arch and some of the angle irons are sheered off. This does not mean that there is immediate danger, but with the contraction that can be expected, due to colder weather, the arch may drop to a point where it is dangerous. To safeguard against such a condition, we are preparing plans for a support under the center of this arch. These plans are not sufficiently complete at this time for contractors to estimate the cost of the construction. Since an ordinance for the transfer of f from the Bridge Repair Fund to the Building Maintenance Fund is to be considered, we felt that this matter should be called to your attention. Until the cost of the bridge repair is determined, it might be advisable to withhold action on the transfer ordinance, or consider a transfer from some other source. 11 A fairly close estimate should be available within two weeks. Fund or the Interceptor Sewer Fund: Northern Indiana Transit Company 25.00 STREET DEPARTMENT: Mr. Anthony Zmudzinski, Street Commissioner, was present and matters pertaining to his department were discussed. Mr. Williams reported that he had not completed his report of the information requested by the Board on the Arnold Street railroad crossing. ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: This being the date set, hearing was had on Imrpovement Resol- ution No. 2524 for a local sewer on Duey Street from South Bend Avenue, north to the North line of Hartman'and Millers Addition and Hartman and Woodworths Addition. In the above named improvement resolution, no remonstrators appeared and no written remonstrances were filed, and the Board being fully advised in the premises, finds that the benefits to the several lots and parcels of land liable to be assessed for said improvement will be equal to the estimated cost of sane as reported by the City. Engineer and that the improvement is necessary. The Board, therefore, decides to take final action on said improvement resolution and declares same in all things ratified, con- firmed and approved without modification. The Board now orders that on the 8th day cf November, 1943 the Board will receive, open and consider sealed proposals for the construction of said sewer up tq l0:00 A.M. The.Board further orders that notice of said proposals shall be published on the 22 day of October, and on the 29th day of October, 1943 in the South Bend Daily Tribune and the Meekly Mirror, according to law. A Contractors bond in the amount of $1,000.00 was approved for John Tamen. This wag' .ordered filed. Mr. Levy informed the Board that certified checks which had accompanied bid bonds of Korte Brothers.and the Hickey :Donstruction Company had been return by him. CEMETERY DEPARTMENT: Mr. Stanley Les zczynski, Sexton, was present and matters pertain- ing.to his department were discussed. There being no further business to come,before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 10:00 A.M.
