HomeMy WebLinkAbout04.06.17 SBACC MinutesAnimal Control Commission Minutes April 6, 2017 6:30 p.m. Commission Members Present: Betsy Culp, Ernest Galos, Rebecca Kaiser, Barb Leavell Citizens Present: Lois Myers Council Members Present: None City Staff Present: Jen Gobel, SBACC Agenda: Meeting called to Order at 6:40 p.m. Ernest Galos indicates he has prepared minutes for March 2, 2017 meeting. Dr. Culp moves to accept minutes. Ms. Kaiser seconds, accepted unanimously. Ms. Kaiser announces River Park Days on May 20. She indicates she bought trailer will see if volunteers will paint it. Possible West Side Memorial Day parade. St. Patrick’s Day Parade had 10 or 15 participants. . Jenn Gobel indicated intakes increased to 242 vs. 208 in 2016. 118 cats and 118 dogs. 70 cats came from two hoarding situations. 13 were euthanized. Adoption numbers 30 this year vs. 31. Rescues went from 52 to 115 this March. Staff commended for their work. Return to owner up 8. Euthanasia went from 111 to 45 this year. Cats 21 vs. 78, dogs 20 vs. 21. Hoarding cases resulted in citations only, no prosecutions. Dr. Culp if follow ups to previous hoarding houses. Ms. Gobel said no, but one from last year has popped up on their radar. Ernest Galos asked about reasons for euthanasia. Ms. Gobel said she can only speak to this year. Three ferals this past month. Ms. Gobel indicated that almost all animals from hoarders checked vaccinated and out of shelter to rescues next day. Currently have 45-50 dogs and 30 cats. Adoptions of cats for past month was 8. Still sending dogs to adoption events at Pet Smart. No cats as need volunteer to go everyday. Ms. Kaiser indicated Matt told her Petsmart changed policy and wanted to control adoption applications. Ms. Gobel reports reduction in respiratory infections. Still working with Meow Mission. Fundraiser: Golf outing scheduled for June 17. Audience recommends a separate tip line for abuse or neglect cases. Also cat cam suggestion. Ernest Galos asked about ad he heard on radio for Pets 911 with old address for SBACC. Ms. Kaiser commented on lack of knowledge of public of South Bend’s shelter. Ms, Gobel indicates more people calling now that animals are put on line. Ms. Gobel indicated they do not do home checks but do background checks and talk to landlords. The next meeting date shall be May 4, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Culp moved for adjournment, Ms.Kaiser seconded and the motion carried 4-0. The meeting adjourned at 7:31 p.m.
