A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND,
INDIANA, PUBLICLY RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING GREATER HOLY
TEMPLE CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST ON THEIR 85TH ANNIVERSARY
Whereas, in June of 1932, the late Elder R.D. Wilson and his devoted wife, Mother Bettie Wilson
started prayer meetings in their home, and went on to establish the Church of God in Christ which
would eventually become Greater Holy Temple Church of God in Christ; and,
Whereas, the mission of Greater Holy Temple Church of God in Christ is to proclaim the gospel
of Jesus Christ that men and women might be saved from their sins, and to serve God’s people and
this community with the love of Christ; and,
Whereas, Greater Holy Temple COGIC members live by the creed we have “Great expectations
from God and He has great expectations from us;” and,
Whereas, Greater Holy Temple COGIC is a church of humble beginnings and means whose
ministry has grown immensely over the past 85 years through the dedicated service of members and
leaders like: Elder Harold Haithcox, Mother Josephine Redding, Missionary Lizzie Mae Davis,
Elder Harrison Benjamin Wiley, Missionary Viola Wiley, and Leroy Webster Sutton; and,
Whereas, under the leadership of Pastor Leroy Webster Sutton the church worked diligently toward
the cause of Kingdom Building and grew substantially—erecting a new sanctuary and the Joy Center
which was later renamed in memory of Pastor Leroy W. Sutton; and,
Whereas, the church is now under the leadership of Pastor Lee D. Ross and First Lady Starla Ross
(daughter of Pastor Leroy Sutton) and continues to grow, prosper, and serve the South Bend
community; and,
Whereas, Greater Holy Temple COGIC continues to set ambitious goals to impact the kingdom of
God living by the creed “the goal before us is not greater than God’s power behind us!”
Now, Therefore, be it resolved, by the Common Council of the City of South Bend,
Indiana, as follows:
Section I. The South Bend Common Council proudly recognizes and congratulates GREATER
HOLY TEMPLE CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST for 85 years of exemplary ministry and service
to the residents of the City of South Bend.
Section II. The Common Council thanks Greater Holy Temple COGIC and its members for
their constant dedication and invaluable contributions to our community. We hope this long-
standing tradition of great expectations continues for many years to come.
Signed this ____ day of July, 2017, in the City of South Bend, the County of St.
Joseph, the State of Indiana.
Section III. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its adoption by the
Common Council and approval by the Mayor.
