Hammermill — Our specification called for a drum with reversible skin as well as replaceable end
caps. When the leading edge in front of the cutting teeth is worn the sections can be unbolted
and turned around to extend their life. The hammermill offered by Duratech does not offer any
of these, it is a one piece design.
Tub — We specified T1 steel based on its strength and resistance to wear, Duratech offers A36
which is a milder steel.
Conveyor System — We specified a single belt type to avoid spill over associated with multiple
belt designs.
Screens — We specified screens made of AR400 steel that are more durable than mild steel. The
Duratech offered by Link included mild steel screens.
Engine — We specified a Tier IV Final engine. They bid a machine with Tier III emissions, they
can do this because the manufacturer Duratech is using EPA credits. The reason we specified
Tier IV Final is because South Bend has been a long time leader in the State of Indiana in the
implementation of alternate fuels and fleet emission reduction. The City has received awards for
our effort from South Shore Clean Cities and Michiana Area Council of Governments. By
bidding a unit with Tier III emissions, this gives Duratech an unfair advantage over the other
bidders and doesn't help us with our goal of reducing fleet emissions.
