RESOLUTION NO. 218-69
RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA
AUGUST 25 , 1969
WHEREAS, the CHICAGO SOUTH SHORE AND SOUTH BEND RAILROAD
(hereinafter called the "RAILROAD" ) has for many years past operated
its trains into the City of South Bend along and over the streets of
South Bend, and
VMREAS, the City of South Bend is experiencing population
growth and increased vehicular traffic along and upon its streets, and
WHEREAS, said increased vehicular traffic is complicated and
made more hazardous by the presence of the RAILROAD'S tracks across and
along the streets of South Bend and the operation of the RAILROAD'S
trains along said tracks, and
WHEREAS, it is the belief and conviction of the COMMON COUNCIL
of the City of South Bend that the traffic problems of the City and the
congestion ipon the streets over which the RAILROAD operates its trains
will be improved and lessened by the removal of the tracks and the rail
traffic thereon,
BE IT, THEREFORE, RESOLVED by the COMMON COUNCIL that it
request and hereby does request that the RAILROAD terminate its passen-
ger trains at a point nearer the westerly limits of the City, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the RAILROAD be requested to re-
move its tracks as they =,i exist in and along LaSalle Street from
LaPorte Avenue on the west to the point where said tracks enter the RAIL-
ROAD'S coach yard on the east, and backfill the slot created by such re-
moval, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the RAILROAD be requested to move
its coach yard, passenger station and related facilities to a point
nearer the westerly limits of the City, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the COMMON COUNCIL does hereby
support the petition of the RAILROAD to the Public Service Commission
of Indiana requesting permission and authority to accomplish the aims
and objectives of this resolution.
