The statement should include detailed information about the proposed Honoree summarizing the Honoree's accomplishments, and reasons as to why the person should be publically recognized. ✓ A petition of support for the proposed Honorary Sign or Honorary Feature. The petition should be signed by not less than fifty (50) residents of the City of South Bend and must include the name, address, signature and date of signing. The petition should be witnessed by one individual and must be notarized prior to submittal. [Note: All information on the petition must be legible in order to be considered.] Upon submission of this Application, please allow four (4) weeks for staff to review, and presentation to the City's Board of Public Works for final action. We would like to honor Miss Brodie with an honorary street name change on West Washington Street between Kaley Street (east) and Falcon (west). Ms. Brodie's constant grassroots advocacy and leadership has had a profound effect on the LaSalle Park area affectionally known as the `Lake'. Gail has been a constant voice of reason for the residents living between Meade, Sheridan, Linden and Western Avenue. She served as president and visionary for approximately 20 years being recruited by then council 2°d district representative Charlotte Pfeiffer and under Gail's leadership many projects were envisioned and completed over her tenure. For example: Ms. Brodie advocated and worked to complete the Western Avenue corridor project phase 1 & 2, LaSalle Park plans that named the walking trial after her mother Miss Annette Brodie, the lighted pathway between Falcon and Kaley Streets on West Washington Streets, the most recent extension for the Charles Black Recreational Center that many of our seniors enjoy on a daily basis, the LaSalle Park Neighborhood Association became a 501 C3 federally recognized organization, there were meaningful relationships started with neighborhood stores as it related to loitering and the selling of negative products (single cigarettes), she lead the organization and its members into collaborations with the South Bend Police Department resulting in becoming a `Weed & Seed' neighborhood, the organization also partnered with Mr. Alonzo Poindexter's ex - offender job placement program that brought countless of jobs to many residents in the LaSalle Park area, and the coordination of revitalizing a dilapidated house with Real Services on Kenmore Street. Gail's leadership style was constant which eroded away at many preconceived ideas and stereotypes in a neglected area of our city. We think that anyone who has spent a great deal of their life volunteering and advocating at the grassroots level deserves the honor and distinction that we are asking to be considered. Gail's record speaks for itself and quite frankly we think it is more appropriate to give her flowers while she is still with us! Thank you for your consideration... r.
