A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday,
January 15, 1962 at 10:00 A.M. CST. All members were present. Minutes
of the last regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were
approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers.
PERMISSION TO ADVERTISE ( 8 CARS - POLICE DEPARTMENT)
Comes now Orson E. Harman, Chief of Police, and requests permission to
place advertisements in The South Bend Tribune and The Record for the
purpose of accepting bids for 8 cars for use of the Police Department.
Permission granted and the Clerk of the Board directed to place advertise-
ments in The South Bend Tribune and The Record on January 199 and January
269 1962. Sealed bids will be opened on February 59 1962.
Four used cars will be considered as a trade-in on the purchase of the
8 new cars. The Chief of Police will designate the old cars to be traded
in this purchase.
REPORT FROM TRAFFIC ENGINEER RE: COLFAX HOTEL LOADING ZONE
Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, recommended zthat; in answer to a request
of the Colfax Hotel, 120 W. Colfax Avenue, through its attorney, Paul J.
Schwertley, that a loading zone be granted to extend a distance of 29
feet to the east from the west property line of the Colfax Hotel.
It is the recommendation that parking meter #2 be replaced to provide
one parking space in front of 118 W. Colfax Avenue. These spaces were
previously allotted to the Courtesy Cab Company., 122 W. Colfax Avenue,
for a cab stand, which the: -Traffic Engineer has recommended be moved west
to in front of 122 W. Colfax Avenue.
Following the recommendation of the Traffic Engineer, the Board fuled-
that the changes be adopted, in acoordance with Mr. Hazinski's report.

CAB STAND
With reference to a request from Robert Gawthrope of the Courtesy Cab
Company, 122 W. Colfax Avenue, for one additional cab stand, after
investigation by the Traffic Engineer, it is recommended that the
Courtesy Cab Company be granted permission to increase the number of
cabs on that`stand from 2 cab spaces to 3. It is further recommended
that the present cab stand be moved to the west on Colfax Avenue to
122 W. Colfax and that the meters numbered 4-6 and 8 be removed and
that these metered spaces become the location for the three cabs.
Upon payment of $75.009 which is the annual rate per cab space, the
additional space will become -.effective, provided that no more than three
cabs be stored at this location at any time and that such violation will
result in removal of this additional cab stand with forfiture of the
annual fee.
The recommendation of the Traffic Engineer, after examination, was
approved by the Board.
The City of South Bend entered into an Agreement with State..of..ZAdjana�:through
Highway Commission of Indiana and its'.dulyauthorized officials approving
the installation of traffic signals at intersection of State Route 2
(Western Avenue and Lombardy Drive),in the City of South Bend.
After the Agreement is ratified by the State of Indiana, a copy will be
placed on file in theBoard-of-Works Office.

BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARD DIVISION
Comes now John Grabarz, Director of the Sub -Standard Division of the
Building Department, and requests a continuance on a hearing involving
property owned by Mrs. Sara 14ogers, located at 2124 W. Washington Avenue.
Case continued until January 22, 1962.
A hearing on sub -standard property commonly known as 1209 S. Lafayette
Boulevard and owned by Alexander Terlecki was also continued until April
161, 1962 at the request of Mr. Grabarz.
A hearing on property owned by Mr. Schrader and located at 914 Clover
Street was continued until March 199 1962 at the request of Mr. Grabarz.
A hearing on property owned by Sam and Bessie Harper, located at 225 S.
Camden Street was also continued until Monday, January 22, 1962. The
owners are appealing a condemnation order and the time allowed for such
postponement of demolition has now expired.
Mr. Grabarz also requested that a hearing involving Judge Lloyd Allen
and Harry Taylor, located at 1705 S. Jackson Street be continued uhtil
Monday, January 22, 1962.
Request granted and case will be heard on January 22, 1962.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT (STREET LIGHT)
Following a recommendation from Nicholas Horvath, Superintendent of the
Electrical Department, the following installation was approved:
1 - 4000 lumen street light at 821 W. Roosevelt Street.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file.
SPECIAL POLICE BOND
A Special Police Bond for Stanley V. Grayzck was accepted and ordered
placed on file.
POLICE DEPARTMENT APPLICATIONS
The following applications for the Police Department were accepted and
ordered placed on file: Clarence J. Kaminski, Erle E, Henderson, Jr.
APPLICATIONS ( FIRE DEPARTMENT)
Applications for the Fire Department were accepted and ordered placed on
file: Frank S. Niespodziany, Jr., David M. Mezykowski
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was
adjourned at 10:30 A.M.
