HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/20/61 Board of Public Works MinutesdAD November 20, 1961 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, November 20, 1961 at 10:00 A.M. CST. All members were present. Minutes of the last regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers. AWARDINQ OF BIDS(FIRE DEPT. - HOSE) After examination of the bids for Fire Hose, it was the decision of the Board to award the requirements for 3/4 inch and 1 inch hose to the following: . _Midwest Fire & Safety Equipment Co., Inc. 1605 Prospect Indianapolis, Ind. Item 9 314t Moulded booster hose, 1500 lb. Working pressure, wire braided reinforced, coupled with Barway Chromed couplings, CHT. (Eureka 0 U.S. Rubber) _ @ $0.89 Item 10 lu Moulded booster hose, 1000 lb. working pressure, wire braid reinforced barway, coupling, C HT (Eureka U.S. Rubber) @ $1.17 All prices F.O.B. South Bend, delivery as required. In accordance with the advertisement, the following requirements were awarded to the above Company: 4.00 ft. 3/4" Hgse @ $0.89 700 ft. 1" Hose @ $1.17 $356.00 819.00 $1,175.00 REPORT: COLFAX HOTEL PARKING ( TRAFFIC ENGINEER & FIRE DEPT Comes now Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, and presents a letter from Capt. C. R. Rzepka, Fire Prevention Bureau, with reference to the matter of parking in front of the Colfax Hotel and ingress and egress to said hotel. The letter states, in part, that the taxi stands in front of the hotel would not hinder the operation of the Fire Department, because in case of an emergency the drivers of these cabs would be available immediately to move said cabs oat, if necessary. The private drive on W►est Side of hotel belongs to the Colfax Hotel and cannot be forced to meet requirements for egress of other neighboring I�roperties. It is 10 feet wide and runs the length of the hotel building. T he management has been ordered to have drive cleared of all obstacles except cars that have parked there previously. With reference to the rear exit, as required by Fire and Building Codes, it is the opinion of the Fire Prevention -Bureau, that this rear exit would not be used in case of emergency because of the construction of the hotel. It is recommended that no parking sign be placed or printed on building near the rear fire escapes to prohibit any parking under the Fire Escapes. Traffic Engineer reports -that this is beinT done. BUILDING DEPARTMENT ( SUB -STANDARD DIVISION), With reference to the sub -standard property owned by Mrs. King and located at 234 E. Sample Street, Mr. Dan Richardson reported that he had inspected the property, as per direction of the Board, and says that he agrees completely with Mr. Grabarz and Chief Downes that this property is sub -standard . Mr. Grabarz reported, at this time, that the house is in such a condition that, in his opinion, it would be impractical to attempt to bring property up to standard. 1 1 1 After hearing all present concerning this case, it was the decision of the Board to grant a continuance of 90 days in order to get property up to standard. During this period, nobody will be permitted to move into this house and, if at the end of this continuance the property: has not been brought up to standard, it will be demolished. A progress report on property located at 1147 N. Johnson Street was presented to the Board by Mr. Grabarz and Chief Downes. Their report was identical that no progress has been made in bringing this property up to standard. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT INSTALLATIONS) - SCOTTSDALE_ Following the recommendation of Nicholas Horvath, Superintendent of the Electrical Department, the following installations were approved: 10 - 4000 lumen lights Scottsdale Addition as per proposal 1 - 4000 lumen light at 1309 Altgeld St. 1 - 4000 lumen light at 920 Weber Circle 1 - 4000 lumen light at Piedmount & Trent -Way All the above in Scottsdale Addition "B" and "C". PETITION TRAFFIC SIGNS TRAFFIC ENGINEER A Petition from residents of the east one-half of the 700 block, East Broadway request "No Parking" signs to be placed in front of the residences reflecting no parking between the hours of 8:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M. and 3.00 P.M. and '74:00 P.N.. The Petition was referred to the Traffic Engineer for investigation and recommendation. _CIVIL DEFENSE MINUTES Minutes of the meeting of the Civil Defense Advisory Council, held on November 8, 1961 were accepted by the Board and ordered placed on file. STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORT Street Llght Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file. PETITION ( STREET LIGHT) POST OFFICE A Petition from Postmaster Granville Ziegler and others reauesting a street light on S. Franklin Street, approximately 1619 S. Franklin, was referred to the electrical Department for investigation and report., and recommendation. _WEIGHTS & MEASURES REPORT A report from the, Department of Weights & Measures for October was accepted by the 1%ard, examined and ordered placed on file. POLICE DEPARTMENT ( APPLICATIONS The following applications for the Police Department were accepted and ordered placed on file: Anthony A. Gish, Larry Munger. _AUXILIARY POLICE APPLICATION An application for Auxiliary School Police from Marjorie Jean Jones was accepted and ordered placed on file. BOND ( DETECTIVE AGENCY) A Bond for Richard L. Crush to conduct the business of a private detective was approved and ordered placed on file. FIRE DEPARTMENT APPLICATIONS The following applications for the Fire Department were accepted and ordered placed on file: John Zrobek, Jr., Richard C. Dombrowski. BUILDING DEPARTMENT ( SUB -STANDARD DIV., .HOUSE:MOVE Comes now John Grabarz and requests permission to grant a house move from 849 Albert Street to Kaley and Fisher Streets, and a move from:23491 Western Avenue to 849 Albert Street.' Mr. Robert Calvin, 830 S. Albert Street, appeared to remonstrate -against the moving of the house from Western Avenue to 849 Albert Street. After hearing Mr. Calvin, the Board advised him that the house to be moved to the Albert Street address would be up to standard,and that the owner would be obliged .to conform to the Building Code. Under :these circumstances, Mr. Calvin withdrew his remonstrance. The house moves were approved with the understanding that all provisions of the Code are meta There being no further', business to come before the Board, the meeting.was gadjdurned at 10:45 A.M.
