A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, October
30, 1961 at 10:00 A.M. CST. All members were present. Minutes of the
last regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and
ordered paid to the various suppliers.
AWARDING OF BIDS - FIRE DEPARTMENT ( SEDAN AND STATION WAGON)
After examination, it was the decision of the Board that the following bids
be awarded for the Fire Department Sedan and Station Wagon:

For Public Address, Radio Alarm and Additional Wiring
Fire Station #13. $642.75
PETITION REFERRED BY COUNCIL ( AMERICAN LEGION POST #357) TRAFFIC SIGNAL
A Petition referred from the Council to the Traffic Engineer for appro-
priate action and to the Board of Public Works & Safety to authorize
the Traffic Engineer to proceed was submitted to the Board.
Also submitted was a -report from Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, with
Petition.
reference to this The Petition, signed by the Commander and
Adjutant of the American Legion Post #357, Inc. was presented requesting
the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Western
Avenue (SR2) and Kosciuszko Street.
Mr. Hazinski also reported that, since this is a state highway, the
petition has been referred to the LaPorte District office of the Indiana
State Highway Department.
The Board recommended that the Traffic Engineer proceed with investigation
for_ installation of such a signal.
TRAFFIC ENGINEER REPORT-( NEW YORK RAILROAD SYSTEMS REQUEST - MEAD ST.
A report from Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer to the Board was submitted.
The report points out that the New York Railroad Systems has requested
that the Meade Street crossing be closed to vehicular traffic during the
time necessary for repair and resurfacing of this crossing.
Mr. Hazinski reports that investigation by his department shows a need
for this repair as the crossing is rough and hazardous , and it is his
recommendation that the crossing at Meade Street and the New York
Central Railroad crossing be closed. beginning Monday, October 30, 1961
and remain closed until repairs are completed.
The Board approved the clossing and ruled that such closing be done
immediately.
TRAFFIC ENGINEER ( FOUR-WAY STOP REQUEST)
Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, reported that a Petition requesting
a four-way stop for the intersection of Blaine Avenue and Hymboldt
Street and at Blaine and Vassar intersection had been investigated
by his department.
After investigation, it is the recommendation of the Traffic Engineer
that a four-way stop be installed at Blaine and Vassar intersection
only.
Following the recommendation of the Traffic Engineer, the installation
was ordered made.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT ( STREET LIGHT)
Following the recommendation of Nicholas Horvath, Superintendent of
the Electrical Department, the Board approved the installation of the
following:
1 - 4000 lumen light at 1211 S. Columbia Court.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT ( SUB -STANDARD DIVISION HEARING)
Comes now._Charles Hensley, 401 N. Francis Street, owner of this property
to protest a demolition order for said property.
The Owner contends that he wishes to save house and will comply with
orders to bring property up to standard.
After hearing Mr. Hensley and Mr. Grabarz, it was the decision of the
Board to continue this hearing until February 5, 1962 to allow the
owner to bring the property up to standard. He was further directed
that work will be started as soon as tenants are removed.
FIRE DEPARTMENT APPLICATION
An application for the Fire Department from Richard Joseph Zmyslo
was accepted and ordered placed on file.
POLICE DEPARTMENT MONTHLY REPORT
A report for the month of September from the Police Department was
accepted and ordered placed on file.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORT
A Street Light Outage Report was accepted and ordered placed on file.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
was adjourned.at 11:00 A.M.
