A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, October
23, I%l at 10:00 A.M. DST. All members were present. Minutes of the last
regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered
paid to the various suppliers.
OPENING OF BIDS - FIRE DEPARTMENT SEDAN AND STATION WAGON
The time now being after 10:00 A.M. it was so announced and bids for the
Fire Department's Sedan and Fire Station were opened and read aloud. Proofs
of Publication from The South Bend Tribune with affidavit signed by Robert
DeLong and The Record .with affidavit signed by Kathleen Sweitzer were read
and found sufficient.

ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - STREET LIGHTS
eollowing the recommendation of Nicholas Horvath, Superintendent of the
lectrical Department, the following street light installations were
approved:
Mayflower Manor Addition
1 - 4000 lumen light at Coleman and Sylvan Lane
1 - 4000 lumen light at Mynatt and -Sylvan Lane
1 - 4000 lunen light at Coleman and Pricilla
1 - 4000 lumen light at Winston and Cabot
Increase 1 - 1000 lunen light to a 4000 lunen light at 1308 W. Dunham St.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - PETITION FOR STREET LIGHT
�+ A Petition from residents in the Columbia Street- Paris Street area was
referred to the Electrical Department for investigation and recommendation.
Said Petition requested a street light on Columbia Street between Wenger
and E. Paris Street.
"D TRAFFIC ENGINEER - STOP SIGNS
Following the recommendation of Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, the following
installations of traffic signs were approved:
Stop Signs installed on St. Peter Street, both sides, at Cedar St.
Stop Sogns installed on Huron Street, both sides, at Edison Street
replacing present Yield Right of Way Signs.
TRAFFIC ENGINEER - PERMISSION TO ATTEND ODURSE AT PURDUE U.
Comes now Clem Hazinski and requests permission to attend a course at Purdue ✓
University from November 6 to November 8, 1961 presented by the Public Safety
Institute and School of Civil Engineering in cooperation with the Indiana
Section of Institute of Traffic Engineers. The New Manual On Uniform Traffic
Control Devices for Streets and Highways by the Bureau of Roads will be
utilized as a text and guide to the course presentation.
The Board, being advised that there is sufficient funds in the Traffic
Engineer's budget for such a trip, granted permission for Mr. Hazinski to
attend this Course. accompanied by Gregory Armstrong of the Traffic Engineering Dept.
RE: COLFAX HOTEL PARKING AND EXITS LETTER
A letter from Paul J. Schwertley, Attorney representing the tenants of the
Colfax Hotel, was submitted to the Board.
The letter calls attention to the fact that there is no loading and unloading
zone marked off in front of this hotel and at present the entire frontage
is being uadd at a taxi stand. Also, the letter advises the Board that
the rear entrance to the hotel is usually blocked so that ingress and
egress ;-As impossible.
After examination, the letter was referred to the Traffic Engineer for
investigation and report.

FIRE DEPARTMENT - PERMISSION TO ADVERTISE
Comes now the Fire Chief and requests permission to advertise for fire
hose. Permission granted. Advertisements will be placed on October 27,
NgVooer 3 and bids will be opened on November 6, 1961.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB STANDARD DIVISION
Bernard R. Donahue, owner of preperty located at 232 E. Sample Street submitted
a letter in which he stated that the dwelling which has been condemned
will be repaired. He also stated that within the next 60 days he will
attempt to rewire the house, install new plumbing and a new heating plant
and paneling on the inside of the house.
Case continued fintil January 2, 1962 in order to allow the above repairs to
be made.
Mr. Grabarz made a progress report on property owned by John Jerkins.
fiaid property is loced at '1147 N. Johnson Street and the Board requested
Mr. Grazarb and Bat. Chief Downes of the Fire Department to make inspections
bi-monthly to ascertain whether any work is being done.
Mr. Grabarz and Chief Downes reported that, up to now, no work has been
done on this property.
APPROVAL OF CIVIL DEFENSE MINUTES
Minutes of the meeting of Civil Defense of St. Joseph CountV,, held on
October 11, 1961 were accepted by the Board and ordered placed on file.
EOL.ICE DEPARTMENT APPLICATION
An application for the Police Department from David John Turner was accepted
and ordered placed on file.
_SPECIAL POLICE BONDS
Bonds for Special Police Robett S. Kizer and Fred F. Miller, employees
of Drewrys Limited U.S.A. Inc. were accepted, approved and ordered placed
on file.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT ( HOUSE MOVE)
Comes now The Building Commissioner and requests permission to move a house
from 1417 Elwood to 1317 King St. The house is owned by William Trobaugh,
the move to be made by Worden Brothers. No affidavits are needed.
Since all regulations are met, the Board grants permission for such a move.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeti
adjourned at 11:00 A.M.
