A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, September
59 1961 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the last
regular meeting and the special meeting were read and approved. Vouchers
were approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers.
TRAFFIC ENGINEER (RE: INDUSTRIAL PARK & CHICAGO, SOUTH SHORE & SOUTH BE
RAILROAD
Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer presented a report concerning the develop-
ment of Industrial Park and the railroad facilities that are included in
the development plan for this area.
It was the recommendation of Mr. Hazinski that the Railroad Company install
a short arm gate and flasher signals with adequate advance warning signs
on-Bendix Drive. It was his recommendation that BendixlYlve be closed
for this installation.
Following the recommendation of the Traffic Engineer, the Board approved
this plan and directed Mr. Hazinski to meet with the Railroad representatives
to work out this plan.
TRAFFIC ENGINEER (STOP SIGN) PETITION
A petition from residents in the area of Blaine Avenue at intersection
of Blaine and Vassar Avenue and the intereseci-bn of Blaime and Humboldt was
presented topthe Board, requesting erection of 4-way Stop Sign.
The Petition was referred to the Traffic Engineer for examination and
recommendation.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT ( STREET LIGHTS)
Following the recommendation of the Electrical Department Superintendent,
the Board approved the installation of the following:
1 - 4000 lumen light at 1923 S. Scott St.
A Petition from Mr. and Mrs. John Joossens and others for a Street Light
on Parkway or close proximity to intersection of Humbolt and Cleveland and
Diamond Avenue was referred to the Electrical Department for investigation
and recommendation.
REQUESTS: COUNCILMAN LEHMAN
Comes now Councilman T. W. Lehman with the following requests:
1. Request for a stop sign at Dubail and Marietta Streets.
2. Request for a stop sign at Hoke and Donald Streets.
3. Traffic control at Miami and Donmoyer Streets and stricter enforcement of
a "Yield" sign at Springbrook and Woodmont Drives.
4. Trucking Company at 2905 S. Main Street is causing a nuisance by
excessive dust in the neighborhood. Requests dust control for this area.
5. Requests that action be taken regarding a house that is located at
2205 Ironwood Drive and which has been condemned but is still left standing.
The Board, having heard Councilman Lehman referred the requests for stop
signs to the Traffic Engineer for investigation and recommendation. The
request for strict enforcement of "Yield" sign was referred to the Police
Traffic Department.
The Board referred the matter of the Bust control on S. Main Street to
Officer Krupa of the Health Department.
The matter of the demolition order of the house at 2205 S. Ironwood
Drive was brought to the attention of the Sub -Standard Department of,
the Building Department. Mr. Grabarz reported, at the meeting, that
this house was owned by an elderly lady who is presently in a Nursing
Home and'her family did not wish to proceed with demolition order because
of her physical condition. This is also a D.P.W. case.
After hearing Mr. Grabarz, the Board ruled that Mr. Grabarz should
expedite this and report back to the Board on what progress had been
made.
Mr. Lehman was advised by the Board that he would have reports toncerning
his requests at the next meeting of the Board.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT (HOUSE MOVE)
A request from the Building Department for a house move from 2605 S. Main
Street but of the City to Dice Street by Lewis Mitschelen, approved, ":Bldg.
Department reported that all affidavits have been secured.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT ( MONTHLY REPORT.)
+ The Monthly Report for August, 1961 from the Building Department was
accepted by the Board and ordered placed on file.
< SLU-STANDARD DIVISION ( HEARINGS)
With reference to property commonly _known as 116 S. Walnut Street, Mr.
Grabarz reported that repair orders had not been complied with. Case
continued until next meeting and Mr. Grabarz was directed to advise
present occupants of this dwelling what work is to be done.

With reference to property located at 603 E. Keasey Street, Mr. Grabarz
and Battalion Chief William Downes of the Fire Department reported that
there are 33 persons living in this house, a sub -standard dwelling.
After hearing Mr. Grabarz and Battalion Chief bownes, it was the decision
of the Board that the dwelling be vacated of the city legal department
would file eviction proceedings.
SPECIAL POLICE BOND
Special Police Bond for Steve J. Toth was approved by the Board and
ordered placed on file.
POLICE DEPARTMENT (APPLICATION)
An application for the Police Department for Edward Steve Szymczak was
accepted and ordered placed on file.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file.
PERMISSION TO ATTEND CONFERENCE (FIRE CHIEF)
Permission was granted to the Fire Chief to attend the Conference of
Indiana State Fire Chiefs at Evansville, Indiana from Tuesday, September
11, 1961 through Saturday, September 16, 1961.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meting was
adjourned at 10:45 A.M.
