A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, August 141
1961 at 10:00 A.M. DST. All members were present. Minutes of the last regular
meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the
various suppliers.
POLICE DEPARTMENT (APPOINTmmrs)
The following applicants having met all requirements for the Police Department
and having been recommended by the Police Chief were appointed to the Police
Department, effective August 169 1961:
Fred J. Gantert, Jr. and Edward Wawrzyniak
The above were also unanimously accepted for membership in the South Bend
Police Pension Fund.
FIRE DEPARTMENT (APPOINTMENTS)_
The following applicants to the Fire Department, having passed all requirements
necessary and having been unanimously accepted by the Firemen's Pension Fund
were appointed to the Fire Department, effective August 169 1961:
John E. Kolacz and James Douglas Cole.
POLICE DEPARTMENT (PERMISSION TO BID FOR CARS)
Comes now Chief Dutrieux and requests permission to advertise for bids for
5 new sedans and 1 station wagon. The Board, having been advised that there
is sufficient funds in the budget for such purchase approves and the Clerk of
the Board is authorized to place advertisements in The South Bend Tribune and
The Record on August 18 and August 25, 1961. Bids will be opened on August 21,
1961 at 10:00 A.M.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT (PERMISSION TO CLOSE ALLEYS - ROBERTSON'S & GREENE'S_)
Permission was given to A. Epstein and Sons, Rngineers and Architects, to
close the alley south of Robertson's Departibent Store west to the rear of
the Post Office.and also the alley in the rear of Greene's for approximately
four days in order to take Test Borings. The Clerk was directed to notify the
Police and Fire Department of this action.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT (PERMISSION TO ATTEND REFRESHER ODURSE)
$ermission was granted to Mr. Elwyn Feinhold, Chief Plumbing Inspector, to
attend a Refresher Course given by the Amefi6an Society of Sanitary Engineering
in St. Louis on August 27 and 28.
SUB -STANDARD DIVISION (HEARINGS)
Comes now Mr. Albert Frank, 418 Cottage Grove Avenue as requested by the Board.
Mr. Frank was unable to appear at the Board Meeting but, prior to the meeting,
gave a statement to the Secretary saying that he does not own the property listed
above nor does he have anything to do with said property nor does he have any
authority over said property which is owned by his father, Mr. John Frank, now
in a Nursing Home.
Case continued for 30 days in order to allow ample time to take further action
with rightful owner of said property.
The hearing on groperty located at 518 S. 33rd St., was considered. Mrs. Kelly
appeared for her daughter who owns the property and advised the Board that her
daughter and husband are out of the city and she has no authority to bring
property up to standard.
Ca se continued for 30 days.
With reference to property located at 122 E. Paris Street where repair orders
had been issued two years ago and follow-up letters issued since that date was
considered by the Board.
Mr. Grabarz was directed to send registered letter, return receipt requested,
to owner of property advising him that demolition would begin unless he
showed cause why property was not brought up to standard.
Case continued for two weeks.
SUB -STANDARD DIVISION (ADVERTISE FOR BIDS)
John Grabarz reported the results of bids for demolition of the following properties:
523 N. St. Joseph St.
B & 0 Wrecking Co. $350.00 with salvage $475 without salvage
M. Osler $2,T00.00 with salvage $21100 without salvage
2509 Lonalev
B & 0 Wrecking Co. $200.00 with salvage $275.00 without salvage
M. 0 sler 550.00 with salvage 575.00'1wthout salvage
Mr. Grabarz was directed to accept the bid of B & 0 Wrecking Company for the
above demolitions.

RE: FIRE STATION NO. 13 (CALLIX MILLER SPECIFICATIONS APPROVAL)
�J A letter from B. B. McDonald, State Examimer to the Board informs the Board that
the drawings and specifications for Fire Station No. 13 have been approved.
The letter was accepted and ordered placed on file.
ELECrRILUL DEPARTMENT (PETITIONS)
The following petitions for street lights were referred to the Rlectrical
Department for investigation and recommentation:
Garden Lane between the 700 and 800 Block.
Kaley Street and Marquette
INDIANA & MICHIGAN PROPOSED STREET LIGHTING SYSTEM ( WEST SAMPLE)
The proposed new street lighting system for West Sample between Michigan -and
Lafayette, referred to the Electrical Department for examination was returned
to the Board with a favorable recommendation. The Board, following this
recommendation, approved the proposal.
ELECRRICAL DEPARTMENT ( STREET LIGHT INSTALLATION)
Following the recommendation of the Electrical Departmentg the Board approved
the installation of a street light between 1700 and 1800 §lock, Pulaski from
Calvert to Dubail.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORT
A Street Light Outage Report was accepted and ordered placed on file.
WEIQHIS & MEASLRES MONTHLY REPORT
The monthly report from the Weights & Measures Department was accepted and
ordered placed on file.
FIRE DEPARTMENT (APPLICATION)
An application from Osba Lee Nicks for the Fire Department was accepted and
ordered placed on file.
POLICE DEPARTMENT (APPLICATION)
An application from Wayne Arthur Clark for the Police Department was accepted
and ordered placed on file.
