HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/24/61 Board of Public Works Minutesi July 24, 1961 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, July 24, 1961 at 10:00 A.M. DST. All members were present. Minutes of the Last regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the various, suppliers. FIRE CHIEF REQUEST (MEETING) Permission was granted tb the Fire Chief to aheckJ"Snorkel" chassis in Wisconsin on July 25, 269 27, 1961. FIRE DEPARTMENT APPLICATIONS The following applications for the Fire Department were accepted and ordered placed on file: Edward Jerzak, Jr., Richard A. Fenimore. BUILDING DEPARTMENT REQUEST ( MEETING) Permission was granted to Verher Lane, Building Commissioner to attend the annual Indiana lns�.ectprs's Association meeting in Elkhart on August 7, 8 and 9, 1961. Permission was also granted for the Director.of Sub -Standard Buildings to attand and also the Chief Plumbing Inspector and the Commercial Building Inspector. SUB -STANDARD DIVISION (HEARINGS) Comes now John Grabarz, Director of the Sub -Standard Division of the Building Department with reference to the following hearings scheduled for this date: With reference to 802 N. Sherman Avenue, owned by Joseph Cherbo, a letter from Mr. Cherbo and doctor's affidavit were presented to the Board. After due consideration it was the decision of the Board to order removal of weeds from the property and bill the owner for same; allos a period of 60 days or, until September 25, 1961 to complete the repair of the dwelling.,y Inasmuch as Mr. Cherbo resides in Chicago, Illinois and neither he nor his representative were.present at the meeting, Mr. Grabarz was directed to notify Mr. Cherbo by letter of the Board's findings. The property owned by Sophie Tufty located at 933 W. Washington Avenue was discussed by the Board. After said discussion it was the decision of the Board that Mrs. Tufty be given 30 days to have dwelling torn down. Comes now Mr. and Mrs. Johnson concering property located at 313 Dundee Street which has been purchased by Louis Bell. It was brought to the attention of , the Board that Mr. Bell has not complied with the Building Department's permit. After hearing all persons, itiiwas the decision of the Board that Mr. Bell be given six months to finish remodeling of said structure. A vacant house, 740 k Bronson, owned by Ben DeBowe was discussed by the Board. Since this house has not been brought up to standard, it was the decision of the Board that said dwelling should be repaired within a reasonable time or Mr. Grabarz will be permitted to proceed with condemnation proceedings. CIVIL DEFENSE Minutes of the Meeting of Civil Defense held on June 14, 1961 were presented to the Board, examined, accepted and ordered placed on file. POLICE AUXILIARY SCHOOL PATROL APPLICATION An application from Dorothy Ann Howell for Auxiliary Schbol Patrol was accepted by the Board and ordered placed on file. 1 1 There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 10:30 A.M. Attest; - --- - 7 -- -- -- July- 319 1961 A special meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, July 31, 1961 at 9:00 A.M. DST. All members were present. Also present was the Chief of Police and Police Officer Erwin F. Kowalski. The Charge for Violation of Regulations Nos. 19 3-and 6 of the Rules and Regulations of the Police Department of South Bend on July 25, 1961 against Irvin Kowalski will be amended and the name "Irvin" will be corrected to read "Erwin" instead. Comes now Erwin Kowalski before the Board and says that the above charges were served to him by a Police Officer and said Chartres were read. Based upon the fact that Officer Kowalski is to retire in March of 1962 upon completion of 20 years with the Police Department, the Board finds that,'based upon Officer Kowalski's admission of this violation of said -Regulations of the Police Department, that Officer Kowalski will serve, from July 27th through August 2nd, 1961 without pay.
