A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, June 26,
1961 at 10:00 A.M. DST. All members were present. Minutes of the last
regular meeting and the special meeting were read and ap roved. Vouchers
were approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers.
BUILDING DEPARTM,ENT - SUB -STANDARD DIVISION (HEARI )
Comes now Irving Hurwich, attorney for Mr. Portman of 1008 IN. Washington
Avenue, to comply with Board order to appear today to show cause why this
property has not been vacated as previously ordered.
It comes to the attention of the Board that three apartments are still
occupied besides the apartment occupied by Mr. Portman.
After hearing Mr. Hurwich, it was the decision of the Board that full
compliance of the previous order boncexningsaid property must be observed
by July 31, 1961 and that all tenants will be removed as of this date,
June 26, 1961. Battalion Chief William Downs, together with the Police
Department representative and Electrical Inspection Department were
directed to proceed to the 1. ,Washington Avenue address to ascertain that
the above order to vacate is carried out.
Comes now Mr. Andrew Pustay, owner of property located at 807 N. Hill
Street with request that condemnation order be withdrawn. After hearing
Mr. Pustay, it was the decision of the Board to withdraw such condemnation
order and allow Mir. Pustay 90 days to bring property up to standard.
Comes now Verner Lane, Building Commissiveione-r, with reference to property
located,.at 1021 Talbot Steet. iiir. Lane explained that advertising "or
-b'lds° ror",the demolition of said property had resulted in bids that were
all too high, and he requested permission to make other arrangements for
said demolition.
After hearing Mr. Lane, it was the decision of the Board that Mr. Lane
may accomplish said demolition by the best and most reasonable method
available, and --his request to waive further advertising granted,.
FIRE DEPARTMENT (AMERICAN RED CROSS REQUEST - AQUATIC WORKSHOP)
A letter from Richard L. Brown, Assistant Director,Safety services Water
Safety, American National Red Cross requested permission for the services
of Captain Horvath of the Fire Department to attend this Workshop on the
Indiana University Campus from August 20 to 26, 1961 to act as a member of
the faculty in teaching Water Skiing.
Permission granted, with understanding this will be at no expense to the
City of South Bend.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT (PETITION FOR STREET LIGHT)
A petition from Mrs. Ophelia Owsley and others for a street light on
Crescent Avenue alley in front of 610 Crescent Avenue was referred to
the Electrical Department for investigation and recommendation.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT (APPROVAL OF INSTALLATIONS OF STREET LIGHTS)
Following the recommendation of Nicholas Horvath, Superintendent of the
Electrical Department the following street light installations were
approved:
Scottswood and Rosemary Lane, 4000 lumen light
2015 Scottswood Drive, 4000 lumen light
1300 Block Rosemary Lane, 4000 lumen light
116 E. Haney Avenue, 4000 lumen light.
All the above. in Coquillard__Addition.
TRAFFIC ENGINEER (TRAFFIC SIGN INSTALLATIONS)
The Board approved the following installations:
Stop sign installed on Vine Street, southwest corner at 23rd St.
Yield Right -of -Way sign installed on Vine Street, northeast
corner at 23rd St.
Stop Sign installed on Harbor Avenue, northwest corner, at Corby St.
Stop Sign installed on Oak Park Drive, northeast corner, at Black Oak Dr.
Yiekd Right of Way sign installed on 0ak Park Dri., southwest
corner, at Black Oak Dr.
Yiekd Right -of -Way sign on Coquillard Drive northwest corner at
Bader St.
Stop Sign installed on Coquillard Drive, southeast corner at Bader St.
Stop Sign installed on Bader St., southwest corner, at Ironwood
Stop Sign installed on Cedar St., southwest corner, at Ironwood
Yield Right -of -Way sign installed on Congress, southeast corner,
at MacArthur
Stop Sign installed on Union St., northeast corner, at Ironwood Drive.
Stop Sign installed on Solomon St., northeast corner, at Ironwood
Yield Right -of -Way sign installed on Dorwood, southwest corner, at
Ironwood
Stop Sign installed on Oak Park Drive, southwest corner, at Ironwood
Drive
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was
adjourned at 11:00 A.M.
