A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Tuesday, May
23, 1961 at-10:00 A.M. DST. Messrs. R. S. A ndrysiak and Irving J. Smith
were present. Minutes of the last regular meeting were read and approved.
Vouchers were ordered paid to the various suppliers.
OPENING AND AWARDING OF BIDS (POLICE DEPARTMENT CARS)
The time now being after 10:00 A.M. it was so announced and bids for the
sedans for the Police Department were opened and read aloud. Proofs of
publidation from The South Bend Tribune with affidavit signed by Robert
De Long and The Record with affidavit signed by. Kathleen Sweitzer were
found sufficient. The following proposals were received:

It appearing that Newman & Altman, Inc. has the lowest bid, the bid is
now awarded to•Newman & Altman, Inc. provided the;proposal meets specifica-
tions.
REQUEST: MCGANN SECURITIES= INC. (SIDEWALK PLANTERS)
Comes now Al McGann of McGann Securities, Inc. and 'requests permission
to install new sidewalks at 125 W. Colfax Avenue, which will house the
Al McGann Securities, Inc. for the purpose of planting othrubs and/or
flowers.
Permission given, subject to the condition that the planters do not exceed
the amount of space used by a tub as far as width is concerned. It is
also specified that insurance, indemnifying the City of South Bend in the
sum of $100,000 per individual injury or $3009000 aggragate and $25,000
property damage, be procured.
The Board further directs that a back door which Mr. McGann wished to
install as a safety exit feature be installed in keeping with the Building
Code.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT ( D. C. JAMESEN - RE: WRECKING STRUCTURE)
D. C. Jamesen appeared before the Board to show cause why he is demolishing
a structure at 1509 S. Michigan Street without the proper Wrecking Permit
or insurance. Mr. Jameson who is a Wrecker was ordered by the Board to
obtain the necessary Wrecking Permit and insurance before proceeding with
the demolition of the structure referred to above.
TRAFFIC SIGNALS (SIGNS)
The Board, following the recommendation of the Traffic Engineer approved
the following traffic signs installed:
Stop Signs - Olive Street, both sides, at Hamilton St.
Stop Signs - Bergan Street, both sides, at Olive St.
Stop Signs - Chicago Street, both sides, at Huron St.
Yield Right -of -Way Signs - Elmer Street, both sides, at Bergan St.
SPECIAL POLICE BOND
The Board approved a Special Police Bond for Special Police Officer
Charles',N. Rockwell and ordered said Bond placed on file.
SPECIAL POLICE APPLICATION AND BOND
The Board approved the application of John Darmen Coplen for Special
Police Officer and also approved the Bond for said applicant.
POLICE DEPARTMENT ( APPLICATIONS)
The following applications for the Police Department were accepted and
ordered.placed on file: Richard E. Pusztai, Stephen E. Johnson.
_MONTHLY, REPORT (POLICE DEPARTMENT)
The Monthly Report from the Police Department for the month of April,
1961 was accepted by the Board and ordered placed on file.
FIRE DEPARTMENT ( APPLICATIONS)
The following applications for the Fire Department were accepted and
ordered placed on file: James D. Cole and Alexander Szabo
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORT
Street Light Outage Report was accepted and ordered placed on file.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
was adjourned at 11:20 A.M.
