HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/17/61 Board of Public Works MinutesApril 17, 1961 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, April 17, 1961 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the last regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were ordered paid to the various suppliers. RE: REQUEST OF REACTIVATION OF SIGN (2023 S. MICHIGAN ST.) Comes now Mr. David Smith with reference to a large sign located at 2023 S. Michigan Street in front of building owned by Michael Karan. Mr. Smith advised the Boaxid that an order had been issued by Mr. Morgan Peck of the City Electrical Inspection Department requesting that the sign be removed since this .&olved city owned property. Mr. Smith wishes to,reactiva,,e this neon sign and requested that order for A' removal be set aside. It was the decision of the Board to continue this hearing for one month and the Clerk of the Board was directed to investigate this matter and report back to the Board. BUILDING DEPARTMENT ( HOUSE MOVE) Comes now Verner Lane, Building Commissioner, and requests permission to issue permit to have house moved from 1504 Lincolnway East to 2236 Pleasant Street. The owner of the house is one Jacob Mitschelen, the mover is one Lewis IMitschelen. The Board, having been advised that residents affected by such move have been notified and there being no remonstrators, it is the decision of the Board that such moving permit be allowed provided that all conditions set up by the Building Department be followed. BUILDING DEPARTMENT (SUB -STANDARD DIVISION) A hearing for the vacation and demolition of property at 322 W. Garst Street was continued until Monday, April 24, 1961. Mr. Grabarz of the Sub -Standard Division of the Building Department was directed to so notify the owners of the property and also Mr. Nick Cholis, attorney. POLICE DEPARTMENT (ACCIDENT_ REPORTS) An Accident Report from Police Officer William Adelsperger was referred to the Board by Chief of Police Dutrieux. Aftet examination, it was the decision of the Board to have this investigated and collect damages. The Clerk of the Board was directed to follow through on such collection and, if unable to reach an agreement, to refer to Mr. Irving J. Smith, City Attorney. An Accident Report referred to the Indiana State Police was referred to the Board. The ac6ident involved Off: Molnar_.�nd Nagy And vehicle driven by Harold Stuard Smiley. Accident resulted in injuried to all involved. After examination, it was the decision of the Board to have this investigated and collect damages. The Clerk of the Board was directed to follow through on such collection and, if unable to reach an agreement, to refer to Mr. Irving J. Smith, City Attorney. TRAFFIC ENGINEER (TRAFFIC SIGNS The Board, following the recommendation of the Traffic Engineer, approved the installation of the following traffic signs: Yield Right of Way Sign on Lancaster Drive, northwest corner at Chippewa Stop Signs on Grant Street, both sides, at Calvert Street. STREET LIGHT OLTAGE REPORT A Report on Street Light Outage was accepted by the Board and ordered placed on file. E FIRE DEPARTMENT (APPLICATIONS) The following applications for the Fire Department were accepted and ordered placed on file: Michael Richard Ewald, Stanley Joseph Kosek, Jr. There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 10:45 A.M. Minutes of the last regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were ordered paid to the various suppliers. FIRE DEPARTMENT (PENSION FUND) In accordance with the recommendation of the Firemen's Pension Fund and the findings of Drs. R. Y1. Spenner, medical examiner and Dr. Egan, the Board approves the pensioning of Fireman John Wishing. .Said retirement shall become effective May 12 1961. FIREMEN'S ANNUAL BALL A letter from the South Bend Firemen's Association by Benedict -Kowalski, Dance Chairman, to the Board requested permission to hold their annual ball in the Drill Hall at Notre Dame on Tuesday, June 13, 1961. Permission granted. APPLICATION (FIRE DEPARTMENT) An application for the Fire Department from John P. Spergl was accepted and ordered placed on file. TRAFFIC ENGINEER (REQUEST: COUNCILMAN LEHMAN) A letter from Councilman Lehman regarding traffic signs and traffic control in the 5th district was presented to the Board, examined and referred to the Traffic Engineer for examination and report. TRAFFIC ENGINEER (ATTEND MEETING) Comes now Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, and requests permission- to attend a meeting on Traffic $ngineering in Indianapolis on April 27, 1961 in the afternoon. Permission granted. POLICE DEPARTMENT (ADVERTISE FOR SEDAN) Comes now Chief of Police Dutrieux and requested permission to advertise for the purchase of a new Sedan for the Department. The Board, having been advised that there is sufficient money in the budget for such a purchase, granted permission. The Clerk of the Board was directed to place advertisements in The South Bend Tribune and The Record on April 28 and May 5, 1961. Sealed bids will be opened at 10:00 A.M. DST on Monday, May 8, 1961.
