HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/03/61 Board of Public Works MinutesApril 3, 1961 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, April 3, 1961 at 10:00 A.M. Mr. Irving J. Smith was not present. Minutes of the last regular meet'ng•were"read and'"approved. Vouchers were ordered paid to the various suppliers. BUILDING DEPARTMENT ( SUB -STANDARD DIVISION) Comes now Mr. Glen Eberly with reference to property at 514 Rush Street to show cause why said property has not been brought up to Building Department standard. According to Mr. John Grabarz, Director of the Sub -Standard Division, this property has been sub -standard for over two years and Mr. Eberly has received frequent notices to rectify these sub -standard conditions, but has failed to comply. The Fire Department has also issued warnings concerning the hazardous conditions of this structure. After hearing Mr. Eberly who contends he is buying the property on Land Contract and that said property was sub -standard when he purchased it and the owner should bear the responsibility of repairs, it was the decision of the Board to continue this hearing for one week to allow Mr..:Eberly time to confer with the owner of this property. A progress report on property at 702 Portage Avenue, commonly known as Lulu's Restaurant, was brought to the attention of the Board. Mr. John Grabarz sub- mitted a copy of a list of requirements referred to the owner of the Property, Gafill` D8 Oil and Denniston Realty, to bring said property up to standard. Appearing before the Board for the owner of the property was a representative of Denniston Realty and Mr.Dj�fiel, representing Gafill DX Oil. Mr. Defiel requested a postponement of this hearing to allow him to confer with the Building Department and come to an agreement as to what repair must be made in order to meet Building Department standards. Case continued until April 10, 1961. ELECTRICAL. DEPARTMENT (RIVERSIDE DRIVE STREET LIGHTING) With further reference to the proposed street lighting of Riverside Drive Nicholas Horvath, Superintendent of the Electrical Department hereby recommends the installation of 28 109000 lumen arterial street lights on Riverside Drive from Lathrop Avenue to Eastmount Drive. The Indiana and Michigan Electrical Company will hold this plan until the completion of the city's Water Main Project. The Board approves the above and the Clerk is directed to notify the Indiana 8 Michigan Elecgric Company with reference to the coordination of said lighting with the completion of the Water )Aain Project. INSTALLATION OF STREET LIGHTS The Electrical Department recommends the following installations-. of street lights: 1. 4000 lumen light at 2. 2500 lumen light in 3. 4000 lumen light in 4. 4000 lumen light in 5. 4000 lumen light at 6. 4000 lumen light at 7. 4000 lumen light at 1211 Vassar Ave. the rear of 3015 Mishawaka Ave. 1700 Block N. Elmer St. the 1800 Block N. Elmer St. the intersection of Meade and Hamilton Sts. the intersection of Elmer and Hamilton St. the intersection of Fremont and Hamilton Stss Following the recommendation of the Electrical Department, the Board approves such installations. POLICE DEPARTMENT (REQUEST: COUNCILMAN LEHMAN - TRAFFIC CHECK) A request from Councilman Lehman, 5th District concerning parking on Miami Street was brought to the attention of the Board. Councilman Lehman requests that the Police Department check the cars parked in two hour parking zone on Miami (1800 Block) so that public may be-al-ert-ed that'the signs have a meaning. Request referred to the Chief of Police for attention and report. 1 REQUEST: (ACTIVE DUTY WITH U. S. AIR FORCE RESERVE) POLICE DEPARTMENT? Comes now Officer F. W. Voss, #133 and requests permission to serve a short term of.active duty with the U. G. Air.Force Reserve as ordered by Reserve Orders # A-33, March 9, 1961. Said term of duty will be for a period of from April 16, 1961 to April 30, 1961"inclusive. Permission granted. CIVIL DEFENSE REPORT -MINUTES OF MEETING OF ADVISORY BOARD A report from Sgt. Woodrow M. McDaniel, Actinv Executive Director of the - Civil Defense together with Minutes of'the Civil Defense meeting were accepted by the Board, examindd and ordered placed on file. TRAFFIC ENGINEER-( SIGNS NEAR STORYLAND ZOO) Comes now Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer, with reference to erection of signs near Storyland Zoo , more particularly at Michigan and Ewing and Main and Ewing so that the public wishing to visit Storyland Zoo can be correctly directed to said Zoo. The Board directed Mr. Hazinski to investigate and make recommendation to the Board. REQUEST: POLICE DEPARTMENT RE. DOWNTOWN BEAUTIFICATION PROGRAM With reference to the work being done on curbs and sidewalks in the downtown area under the Downtown Beautification Program, the Board directs Mr. William Richardson tnd the Police Department to coordinate their efforts so that adequate olice q � protection is available at the scenes of such repairs and/or replacement so as to protect pedestrians. STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORT A Street Light Outage Report was accepted and ordered placed on file.
