March 27, 1961
A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, March
27, 1961 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the last
regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were ordered paid to
the various suppliers.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT - ,SUB STANDARD DIVISION )
With reference to property at 313 N. Scott Street, a letter from David
Oberg, owner of the property and presently in the U.S. Army School,
was received by the Board.
Mr. Oberg stated that he is having difficulty in getting contractors to
repair his property in order to bring it up to standard.
The Board directed Mr. John Grabarz, of the Sub -Standard Division of the
Building Department to assist Mr. Oberg in this matter.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT - ATTEND ANNUAL SCHOOL
Comes now Verner Lane, Building Department Commissioner, and requests
permission for members of his Department, whom he will select, to
attend 'the Apqual Schhol of Indiana Inspector's Association, Inc. to
be helld at Ahe University of Notre Dame on April 39 4 and 5, 1961.
Permission granted to Mr.''Lane for attendance at this Annual School.
Other members of the Building Department will be permitted to attend,
as selected by Mr. Lane.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT(R IVERSIDE DRIVE STREET LIGHTING)
A letter from the Indiana 8 Michigan Electric Company with reference to the
street lighting on Riverside Drive between Lathrop Street and Eaastmont Drive
addressed to Nicholas Horvath, City Electrical Department, referred to
the Board of Public Works & Safety was examined by the Board.
It was the decision of the Board that this proposed street lighting project
will be postponed until the water main project is completed. The letter
and attached plan showing proposed locations of street lights were ordered
placed on file temporarily in the file under "Electrical Department."
REQUESTS: STREET LIGHTS (COUNCILMEN)
A request for the following street lights from J. Chester Allen, Councilman -
at -Large was referred to Nick Horvath, Electrical Department Superintendent:
1. East side, middle of block, of 1700 block on N. Elmer St.
2. 1800 block on west side between 1829 and 1941 N. Elmer St.
3. Northeast corner of Meade and Hamilton Streets.
A request from T. W. Lehman, Councilman, 5th District, for a street light
in the first alley north of Mishawaka Avenue between the 3000 and 3100 blocks,
was referred to Nick Horvath, Electrical Department Superintendent.
The Board requests the Electrical Department to investigate both requests
and report findings back to the Board.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
A report -on.,. the Street Light Outage Wasaccepted by the Board and ordered
placed on file.

A copy of the By -Laws adopted by the Board of Trustees of the Firemen's
Pension Fund was accepted by the Board and ordered placed on file.
A copy of the Physical Requirements for Applicants to the Fire Department
was accepted and ordered placed on file.

SPECIAL POLICE OFFICER
The Board approved the appointment of Bill Kaman as a special police
officer employed by the Urban Redevelopment C6mffiission.
POLICE DEPARTMENT ANNUAL REPORT
The Annual Repott covering the year.1960 from the Police Department was
accepted by the Board and ordered placed on file.
ANNUAL REPORT TRAFFIC DIVISION
The Annual Report'of the Traffic Division for the year 1960 was accepted by
the Board and ordered placed on file.
FIRE DEPARTMENT APPLICATION
Application for the Fire Department from Dennis E. Coyle was accepted and
ordered placed on file.
