A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Mondayy;,January
169 1961 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the last regular
meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to
the various suppliers.
RE: TRAFFIC 9A 7ARn= (EUNICE AND MCKINLEY)
IAt has been brought to the attention of the Board that a traffic hazard:', exists
at Eunice Drive and McKinley due to a parking area at this location. In order
to protect life and property, Vernon Lane, Building Department Commissioner
and Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer,were instructed by the Board to investigate
this situation thoroughly and report findings and recommendation back to the
Board. Until steps are taken to correct this Hazardous condition, the Board
does not want parking at"this site.
_BUILDING DEPARTMENT - HEARINGS
Comes now John Grabarz with reference to hearing on property located at 122 N.
Studebaker Street. Comes also the owner, Mrs. Imogene Nailon to show cause
why the above described property has not been brought up to standard. Mrs.
Nailon requested the Board for an extension in order to bring property up to
standard. Request granted and hearing continued until July 1, 1961. If
property is not up to standard in accordance with the--Buildinq:Department
specifications, said building will be ordered demolished.
With reference to property at 313 N. Scott Street, owned by Mr. Obert, a hearing
on this originally scheduled for January 9, 1961 and continued until this date
was held. Mr. Oberg's brother appeared to show cause why this property has
not been brought up to standard. The Board, having heard that the owner is
in the U.S. armed services, directed Mr. Grabarz to give copy of requirements
for this property to Mr. Oberg's brother and continued this hearing for
two weeks, or until January 30, 1961.
_BUILDING DEPARTMENT REQUEST (ADVERTISE FOR BIDS)
Comes now Vernon Lane, Building Commissioner, and requests permission to
advertise for bids for the purchase of an automobile for the Building Depart-
ment in accordance with specifications.
The Board, having been advised that the matter has been checked with the City
Controller's office and that sufficient money has been provided in the bfadget
for 1961 Building Department for such a purchase, request was granted. Clerk
of the Board was directed to place advertisements in the South Bend Tribune and
The Record on January 20 and January 27 for sealed bids. Said bids will be
opened on January 30, 1961 at 10:00 A.M.
FIRE DEPARTMENT (FIRE STATION NO. 1�) IMPROVEMENT
The Board, having determined t-hal it is necessary to have the services of an
architect in connection with the improvement and/or enlargement of Fire Station
No. 13 now requests Mr. Callix Miller to submit contract for such improvement.
POLICE DEPARTMENT APPOINTMENTS
The following applicants to the Police Department, having been examined by the
Pension Board and having been referred to the examining physician for examination
and having been found to be physically and mentally capable, the Board now
approves the appointment of said applicants, effective January 16, 1961;
Robert Werntz, Walter Szynski, Frederick P. Odusch, Thomas Frederick Gustafson;
Norbert J. Hechlinski, Norbert Turzynski.
POLICE DEPARTMENT APPLICATION
An application for the Police Department from Harold LaVerne Barry was accepted
and ordered placed on file.
POLICE DEPARTMENT PROMOTION
Upon the recommendation of the Police Chief of Police Officer William Thomas
was promoted to the rank of Detective Serseant as of January 16, 1961.
SPECIAL POLICE
The copies'.of the..Special,.-Pol: ce Commission having been lost, duplicate copies
were approved by the Board and ordered placed on file. These are Harold
Robert Riley, James A. McCartney.
Fred J. Martel's application for Special Police Officer was approved and ordered
placed on file.
FIRE DEPARTMENT APPLICATION
The application of Ervin Edward Wroblewski for the Fire DeFertment was
accepted and ordered placed on file.
OFFICIAL BONDS( SPECIAL POLICE
Bonds for the following Special Police were examined, by the Board, approved
and ordered placed on file: L. C. Barnes, James Snyder, Elmer J. Coil.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
StreittLight Outage Reports were examined and ordered placed on file.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was
adjourned at 10:45 A.M.
