HomeMy WebLinkAbout12/30/60 Board of Public Works MinutesDecember 30, 1960 s A_special meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Friday, December 30, 1960 at 3:00 P.M. All members were present. The following business was considered by the Board: POLICE DEPARTMENT GRADING SYSTEM Effective January 1, 1961,,the following designations shall be in effect for the Police Department of the City of South Bend: An officer with less than five years service on the Police Department shall be designated as a First Class Patrolman, or first grade patrolman. An officer,with more than five years service on the Police Department but less than 'nine years service on the Police Department shall be designated as a Second Class Patrolman and shall be entitled to $120 more per annum in salary than a First Class Patrolman. An officer with more than nine years service on the South Bend Police Department but less than thirteen years service on the South Bend Police Department shall be designated as a Third Class Patrolman and shall be entitled to $240 more per annum in salary than a First Class Patrolman. An officer with more than thirteen years service on the South Bend Police Department but less than seventeen years service shall be designated as a Fourth Class Patrolman and shall be entitled to $360 more per annum in salary than a First Class Patrolman. An officer with more than seventeen years service on the South Bend Police Department shall be designated as a Fifth Class Patrolman and shall be entitled to $480 more per annum in salary tnan a First Class Patrolman. FIRE DEPARTMENT GRADING SYSTEM Effective January 1, 1961, the following designations shall be in effect for the Fire Department of the City of South Bend: A fireman with less than five years service on the South Bend Fire Department shall be designated as a First Class Fireman. A fireman with more than five years service on the South Bend Fire Department but less than nine years service shall be designated as a Second Class Fireman and shall be entitled to $120 more per annum in salary than a First Class Fireman. A fireman with more than nine years service on the South Bend Fire Department but less than thirteen years service shall be designated as a Third Class Fireman and shall be entitled to $240 more per-.annum in salary than a First Class -Fireman. A fireman with more than thirteen years service on the South Bend Fire Department but less than seventeen years service shall be designated as a Fourth Class Fireman and shall be entitled to $360 more per annum in salary than a First Class Fireman. A fireman with more than seventeen years service on the South Bend Fire Department shall be designated as a Fifth Class Fireman and shall be entitled to $480 more per annum in salary than a First Class Fireman. Statute No. 48-6507) FIRE DEPARTMENT APPOINTMENT Comes now Fire Chief Alex Andrzejewski and requests that Mr. Kay L. James be appointed to the South Bend Fire Department. 1 NM 1 Said applicant has been accepted by the Firemen's Pension Fund, and has also met all physical and other requirements of the Medical Examiner. Therefore, the Board acts favorably upon the recommendation of the Fire Chiaf and said Kay L. James is unanimously accepted and appointed to the South Bend Fire Department, assigned to the Electrical Department, effective January 1, 1961. There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 3:30.$.M. Chairman January 3, 1961 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Tuesday, January 3, 1961 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the last regular meeting and the special meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers. BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB STANDARD DIVISION With reference to the property located at 1059 Burns Street, owned by Reverend R. D. Wilson, comes now Rev. Wilson, represented by his attorney, Chester Alley, and informs the Board that certain changes in carpenters and contractors have been made and, under this arrangement, property can be brought up to standard as required by the Building Department. Mr. Allen requests Board to grant a continuance for`his client until May, 1961 at which time structure will be completed in accordance with the Building Department requirements. Request granted and case continued until May 1, 1961 at which time hearing will be held on the above. POLICE DEPARTMENT - RE -APPOINTMENT Comes now Robert W. Seals who was previously a -member of the South Bend Police Department and now requests re -appointment to the Police Department. The Board, finding that the Police Pension Board has approved said reappointment now appoints Mr. Seals as a member of the Police Department, effective January 4, 1961. POLICE DEPARTMENT APPLICATIONS An application for the Police Department from Richard I. Chlebek was accepted and ordered placed on file. FIRE DEPARTMENT APPLICATIONS The following applications for the Fire Department were accepted and ordered placed on file: John A. Kluszczynski, Raymond F. Szabo, John Abell, Francis J. Beck. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT Following the recommendation of Nicholas Horvath, Superintendent of the Electrical Department, the Board approved the installation of a 2500 lumen alley light in the rear of 115 W. Walnut St. INSURANCE REGULATIONS: ENCROACHMENT ON CITY PROPERTY Effective this date, the following amounts of insurance will be required for encroachments on city property. Said insurance will indemnify the City of South Bend: $100,000.00 each individual accident, $300,000 maximum accident, $25,000 property damage. These are the minimum requirements. Additional coverage may be requested, at the discretion of the Board.
