Smith acid And' si:ak were pres#,. Minutes of the previous regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT STREET LIGHT INSTALLATION Comes now Nicholas Horvath of the Electrical Department and recommends the installation of a 4000 lumen street light at 1024 N. Lawrence St. Recommenda- tion approved and street light ordered installed. BUILDING DEPARTMENT - HEARINGS With reference to the hearing on the property located at 805 S. Bendix Drive, Rev. J. H. Bowles submitted the following letter to the Board: On August 22, 1960, I, Reveremd Bowles, appeared before the Board of Safety to appeal a condemnation order issued by the Building Department for the above referred address. A list of requirements was'sent by the Building Department which would be necessary to correct the structure. Using this list as a guide for estimates, I find that it was not economically feasible to make the necessary repairs. I therefore request the Board to set aside the appeal and request the Board of Safety to direct the Building Department to advertise for bies to demolish the subject stricture charging all costs as a lien against the property. (signed) Reverend J. H. Bowles Mr. Grabarz, Director of the Sub -Standard Division of the Building Department, was directed to proceed with the Condemnation Order provided the property owner had been so notified by registered mail, return receipt reauested. John Grabarz submitted a letter to the Board concerning the property at 523 N. St. Joseph Street. The letter reports that on June 27, 1960 a condemnation order was issued by the sub -Standard Division of the Building Department and a period of 30 days was allowed for the completion of the demolition. To date, no action has been taken on the order. The Building Department requests the Board to hold a hearing regarding this matter. The Board alproved the condemnation order and directed the Building Department to proceed with the condemnation order and remove the structure. John Grabarz presented a progress report on the property located at 20I2 203 E. Keasey :Street. Mr. Walker, owner of the property, was requested to appear before the Board to show cause why he had not repaired building. In February of 1960 a list of sub -standard conditions was sent to Mr. Walker and he was advised to keep property vacant until repair were made. Repair have not been made and house is now occupied. The Building Department is directed to submit a registered letter, return receipt requested, to Mr. Walker that demolition will take place in two weeks from date. If he has any objection he shall appear before the Board not later than September 26, 1960. The Building Department was directed to take all measures necessary to remove the structure from the premises, if above order is ignored. A hearing on the property owned by Mr. Talboon at 1612 N. Meade Street was continued for two weeks. A progress report concerning the property located at 730 S. Carlisle Street was brought to the attention of the Board. It was disclosed that this property was P. by A. The Building Department was directed by the Board to tear down the structure and assess the costs against the property. Comes now Charles Howell before the Board.concerning property at 515 Hill Street. Hearing on this was continued for one week and referred to the Building Department for examination and report. FIRE DEPARTMENT REQUEST - TRIP Permission was granted to Radio Technician J. Andrzejewski of the Fire Department to make a trip to Gary, Indiana Fire Department on Wednesday, September 14, 1960. The purpose of the trip is to straighten out the difficulty the Fire Department is encountering with the Gary Fire Department on conflicting communications signals. Permission was granted. INDIANA & MICHIGAN ELECTRIC COMPANY LIGHTING CONTRACT AGREEMENT A letter from Seebirt, Oare, Deahl & Thornburg in connection with the recent agreement and supplemental agreement between the I &<M,And the City of South Bend relating to electricaY lighting, advised that the copies of these agreements have been filed with the Public Service Commission and its approval was obtained on September 2, 1960 The letter was ordered placed on file. TESTIMONIAL LETTER RE: FIRE DEPARTMENT A letter from John Kagel, Executive Director of the Downtown South Bend qrj+ Council complimenting the South Bend Fire Department for their efficiency r-1 in extinguishing a fire in the basement of the Sherland Building was in directed to the Board. The letter was read aloud and ordered placed on < file. The Board also expressed its gratitude to the Downtown South Bend 11 Council for its expression of appreciation. A petition for a street light on Monroe, between Olive and Meade Streets was referred to the Electrical Department for recommendation and report. CIVIL DEFENSE REQUEST - MINNEAPOLIS CONFERENCE A request that Sgt. Woodrow M. McDaniel, County Coordinator, be permitted to attend the ninth annual U.S. CD Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota from September 20 to the 23rd, 1960 inclusive, was granted. POLICE DEPARTMENT REQUEST - MILITARY LEAVE Comes now Captain 0. E. Harman of the Police Department and requests leave of absence to fulfil orders from Office of Special Investigation, United States Air Force to report to Bunker Hill Air Force Base for active duty training from September 19, 1960 to October 31 lo60. Permission was granted. Application for Police Auxiliary School Patrol from Elaine Dolores Marshall was accepted and ordered placed on file. Street Light Outage Reports were examined and ordered placed on file. There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting s adjourned at 11:30 A.M. Chairman Attest: An�*ny J.
