Department of Public Parrs Administration Building St. Louis Boulevard at Wayne Street South Bend, Indiana 46617 PHONE: (219) 284 -9401 August 9, 1978 Mr. Roger Parent, President South Bend Common Council County -City Building 227 West Jefferson Boulevard South Bend, Indiana Dear Mr. Parent: The Department of Public Parks is requesting the Common Council to approve a resolution to submit an application to the Division of Outdoor Recreation for Land and Water Conservation Funds. The project would consist of three parts: 1. Construction of walkway (either floating or fixed) under the west side of the Jefferson Boulevard Bridge and extending the present walkways from the Century Center and Plaza Park to connect to the walkway under the bridge. This project would alleviate the need for persons using the river bank walk to cross the heavily traveled Jefferson Boulevard. The above project would provide a river bank walk from La Salle Street to Monroe Street without crossing a street. Estimated Cost - $40,000.00 2. Howard Park Trail. Construct a trail from Saint Louis Boulevard west through Howard Park to the existing gate in the wall and then North to Jefferson Boulevard Bridge under pass in hopes that someday we can connect with the construction now under way next to the Moonraker. Mr. Roger Parent Page 2 The project would include construction of under pass, paving, lighting, grading, landscaping, observation areas, etc. Estimated Cost - $60,000.00 3. Northside Boulevard Trail from River Gate - Construct trail South from gate in Howard Park under the pedestrian bridge and connect with the pedestrian walk and connect with trail mentioned in item two. The project would consist of grading, lighting, paving, land- scaping, etc. Estimated Cost - $50,000.00 Total estimated project cost - $150,000.00 If the application would be approved, one -half the project cost ($75,000.00) would be returned to the City. This money could be spent for additional river bank development. Very truly yours, DEPA)RTMENT OF PUBLIC PARKS James R. Seitz, Superintendent JRS:kb
