A special meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Tuesday, April 26, 1960
at `8:30 A.M. 'All members were present.
The Board having set a special meeting for this date in reference to a request to the
removal of a house at 2618 Bertrand Street to 2418 Rogers Street, comes now Homer Me-
lott, and requests that the remonstrance be withdrawn and the Building Commissioner
now informs the Board that certain requirements have been set up to the mover and the
owner prior to moving said building. The requirements as set out are as follows:
a. Adequate foundations.
b. Complete check of electrical service`and wiring to insure compliance
with code requirements.
c. Complete check of plumbing systems to insure code requirements.
+ Plus all other applicable requirements of Ordinance No. 4268-59.
Comes now Herman Miller, being represented by Lloyd Anderson, petitioner for removal
of the house located at 2621 Kenwood to 2900 Westmore Street and Ervin Boehm, remon-
strator to said petition to move said house to same addition. The Building Commissioner
also appeared in regards to said petition and informs the Board that certain requirements
must be met before he recommends the removal of said house. The requirements and reco-
mmendations are as follows:
Recommendations:
a. The cellar be dug to a depth so as to bring the structure to the
lowest possible height.
b. General painting of exterior.
Requirements:
a. The electrical system be repaired or replaced to meet code
requirements.
b,'-,The plumbing system to have thorough check to insure complete
code requirements for installations and venting.
c. The rotted or otherwise deteriorated sill plates be replaced.
.d. Adequate supports or joist system for front porch.
e. Repair and redecorating of interior plus all applicable re-
quirements of Ordinance No. 4268-59.
Mr. Boehm informs the Board at this time that he has discussed with Mr. Miller this
matter and Mr. Miller agrees that each and every recommendation and requirement as
set out in the Building Code as submitted to him by Mr. Lane will be effected to said
house in order to have it conform with other house in.that area. The Board having
examined the facts, now grants said moving permit.
Comes now the owner of the building at 702 Western Avenue and also Verner Lane and re-
quests permission on behalf of the property owner that he be permitted to have a smoke
pipe for a barbecue pit to extend over public property. Mr. Lane informs the Board
that the Building Dgartment has examined said matter and have no objections to said
petition. The Board having examined evidence therefore granted the owner his request.
However, said owner is directed to submit to the Board insurance for personal injury,
property damage, and liability indemnifying the City of South Bend.
The Building Commissioner and John Grabarz are hereby given permission to attend the
annual Building Official Conference of America in Miami Beach, Florida on May 22 thru
May 269 1960. Mr. Lane informs the Board that he has sufficient monies available in
his budget to cover the expenses and the Board grants permission to depart from the
City on the 16th day of May, 1960 or any time thereafter. -
Permission is hereby granted to the River Park Methodist Church, 920 S. 23rd Street to
advertise a Benefit Pancake Fry on Saturday, April 30, 1960 as so requested by Howard
Cutner, 3410 E. Jefferson. It is understood that the advertising will be from a P.A.
System on a car, and further that it will be kept low enough as not to create a noise
nuisance.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was called ad-
journed at 900 A.M.

A regular meeting of the Board
of Public Safety was held on Monday,
May 2, 1960 at
10:00 A.M. All members were
present. Minutes of the previous regular meeting were
read and approved. Vouchers
were approved and ordered paid to the
various suppliers.
Special police bonds are now
approved for Robert Smith and Garwood
E. Schroff.
Special police applications
are now approved for Ralph Estel Fouts,
Jr. and Julius
Yuhouse.
The Board of Trustees of the Firemen's Pension Fund hereby informs the Board of Public
Works & Safety of the acceptance of Dr. Richard W. Holdeman to the Pension Fund Medi-
cal examining staff. The appointment of Dr. Holdeman is the result of a vacancy cre-
ated when Dr. Robert B. Sanderson previously requested dissociation as the pension
fund's medical examiner.
The time now being after 10:00 A.M. it was so announced and the bids for the Police
Department 3-wheel motorcycles were opened and read aloud. Proofs of publication`:in
the South Bend Tribune with an affidavit signed by Robert DeLong and in The Record
with an affidavit signed by Ruby McMahon were submitted to the Board and found suffi-
cient. The single bid received reads as follows:

South Bend, Indiana
Two (2) 3-wheel Motorcycles
Total bid price ------- $2796.40
The bid will be taken under advisement and study and will be awarded at the next
regular Board meeting. r'
The Board hereby approves the appointment of George Gyori and Ernest Rozanski to
the South Bend Fire Department. Said applicants have passed all required written
examinations and the physical examinations by the City Doctbr and further having
been accepted for membership in the Pension Fund of the Fire Department, the appoint-
ment shall become effective the 2nd day of May, 1960.
It appearing to the Board that notice of condemnation was served by the Building De-
partment to Ison and Addie Townsend, 147 N. Wellington as well as the Muhammab Temple
of Islam addressed to 535 S. Green Street in Chicago, Illinois with reference to the
structure located at 147 N. Wellington and it also appearing that no action was taken
to this date, therefore, said matter is referred to the Board of Public Works & Safety
for hearing. After examining evidence on this matter as submitted by the Building De-
partment, the Board hereby directs the Sub Standard Division of the Building Depart-
ment to proceed with the legal advertising of bids for condemnation of same.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the
