SABO, CLERK April 18, 1960 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, April 189 1960 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the previous regular meeting were read and approved. (Irving J. Smith was absent) Comes now Nick Horvath, Supt. of the Electrical Department, and recommends installa- tion of a 4000 lumen light at Hoffman Court and Pennsylvania Avenue. At the April llth regular meeting of the Council, a petition requesting the improve- ment of the end of the alley on Howard Street from Lawrence Street to Hill Street by street lighting was referred to the Board for action as so motioned by Councilman Tell - son and seconded by Councilman Muszynski. Said petition is now referred to the City Electrical Department for investigation and recommendation. A petition is hereby presented to the Board by Joseph J. Horvath, 1908 S. Kemble and several others asking for the improvement of the intersections of Ewing and Meade Sts., Ewing and Wabash Streets, Meade and Delaware Streets, and Wabash and Calvert Streets by the construction of street lighting. Referred to Nick Horvath of the Electrical Department for investigation and recommendation. Applications for the Police Department were examined and placed on file for Kay James and Richard Bagarus. Applications for the Fire Department are examined and placed on file for Martin Mersich. Comes now Leroy C. Barritt of the South Bend Police Department and requests permission to have his original leave which started on January 16, 1960 to be extended for 1 year from said date which would be January 16, 1961. Permission granted. Comes now John Grabarz of the Building Department, appearing with I. C. McGee, who re- sides at 506 Keasey reference to remodeling and repairing a home at 615 E. Ohio Street. The Board hereby grants a 60 day period from date to complete said repairs with the understanding that Mr. McGee will appear within 30 days, namely on May 16, 1960 before the Board to give a progress report, and if progress is satisfactory, then the Board will allow the remaining 30 days to finish the project. The Board hereby approves the appointment of Thomas Herma to the South Bend Fire Depart- ment. Said applicants have passed all required written examinations and the physical examinations by,the City Doctor and further having been accepted for membership in the Pension Fund of the Fire Department, his appointment shall become effective the 18th day of May, 1960. w .. The time now kje!ing,after 10,0.0. A.M. it was so announced and the bids for the Police De- partment were opened and read aloud. Proofs of publication in the South Bend Tribune with an affidavit signed by Robert DeLong and in The Record with an affidavit signed by Ruby McMahon were submitted to A he Board and found sufficient. The.bids received read as follows: Police Department Newman Altman Company South Bend, Indiana Four (4) 1960 V-W4 4-door Sedans Total bid price ----- $72571.40 Freeman Spicer Company South Bend, Indiana Four (4)1960 Studebaker Lark Deluxe 4-door sedans Total bid price ----- $79663.44 The bids will be taken under advisement and study and will be awarded on or before the next regular Board meeting on Monday, April 259 1960 III �J [1 There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was called adjourned at 10:40 A.M. Attest: Anthony CHAIRMAN April 25, 1960 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, April 259, 1960 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the previous regular meeting were read and approved. Claims were ordered paid to the various suppliers., The monthly report of Marchq 1960 and the annual report of the Police Department is hereby accepted and placed on file. Nick Horvath, Electrical Department Superintendent, recommends installation of 4000 lumen lights at: 514 East Howard Street Ewing and Meade Streets Ewing and Wabash Streets Meade and Delaware Streets Wabash and Calvert Streets Wabash and Delaware Streets Applications for the Police Auxiliary School Patrol were examined and placed on file for Norma Boettcher. The Board hereby approves the appointment of Martin Mersich to the South Bend Fire De- partment. Said applicant has passed all required written examinations and the physical examinations by the City Doctor and further having been accepted for membership in the Pension Fund of the Fire Department, his appointment shall become effective the l'st day of May, 1960. Comes now Lewis Jackson and Harry Taylor representing Walter McCartney reference to the matter of a condemnation order issued against the property:.located at 510 W. Calvert and said parties inform the Board that it would cost more than the value of said building to bring it up to Building Code standards and therefore said parties request permission to have this matter continued for 60 days to have said building demolished. The Board hereby grants said continuance until June 279 1960. Further in regards to this matter, comes now John Grabarz of the Building Department, and recommends that said building be boarded up at'this time until June 279 1960. Further in regards to this matter, Mr. Jack- son informs the Board that he will have the receiver board up said building within 2 weeks from date unless it is torn down before that date.
