A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, January 4,
1960 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the previous regular
meeting were read and approved.
Comes now Chief Andrzejewski of the Fire Department and requests permission to
send Battalion Chief Carl Lederrer to attend Fire Institue School at Purdue Uni-
versity on January 11 through January 15, 1960. Permission granted.
Comes now John Grabarz, Director of SubStandard Buildings, and submits to the Board
proof of notice to a one George Byars, owner of real estate located at 2621 Linden
Avenue, wherein said owner was directed to correct all defects in said dwelling or
same by September 9, 1958 and that prior to that date of said notice the Inspection
Department of the Plumbing and Heating Department and the Electrical Engineering De-
partment having examined said building reported that the building did not conform
with the property Building Code standards.
Further proof of said notice was served upon by Officer Voss on the 26th day of Sep-
tember, 1959. That subsequently on the 7th day of December,.1959 said owner stated that
he would correct these defects or demolish said building. Said owner failed to do so,
and was therefore requested to appear before the Board of Public Works and Safety on the
14th day of December to show cause why he had not acted.
On the 14th day of December, 1959 said George Byars failed to appear and proof is hereby
submitted along with reture receipt of said notice. That subsequently the Building De-
partment was directed to call upon Mr. Byars personnally to mane certain that he was
actually given notice.. That on the 29th day of December, 1959, Officer Cholaskinski
of the South Bend Police Department read the notice to said Byars. Said George Byars
failed to appear again this day, therefore the Board now directs the Building Depart-
ment to proceed with demolition of the dwelling located at 2621 Linden Avenue.
The Board hereby approves the appointment of Donald Daniel Bonek, Clement Peter De
gucz, John Frederick Lederer, John R. Leszczynski, Ernest Lee Milbourn, Matthew John
Puecker, James Robert Rzeszewski, and Edward Morris Scott to the City of South Bend
Police Department. Said applicants having passed all required written examinations
and the physical examination by the City Doctor and further having been accepted for
membership in the Police Pension Fund, their appointment will become effective the
4th day of January, 1960 with the exception of Clement DeGucz and James Rzeszewski
whose appointment will become effective the llth day of January, 1960.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned
at 10:45 A.M.
