A special meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Wednesday, August 12,
1959 at 2:00 P.M. All members were present. The following business was transacted
at this meeting:
Comes now Police Chief J. Charles Dutrieux of the South Bend Police Department and
submits a request on behalf of Officer P. Gordon for a leave of absence from his
present duties with the South Bend Police Department, effective at the start of the
pay period, August 16, 1959, and if necessary, for a period of twelve months, thru
August 16, 1960, due to health conditions. Officer Gordon informs the Board at
this time that he understands that he will.draw no compensation from the Police De-
partment during the time of this leave. After due consideration, the Board now
grants Officer Gordon said leave.
T herebeing no other business to come before the Board the meeting was called ad-
journed at 2115 P.M.

A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, August 17,
1959 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the previous regular
meeting were read and approved. Claims in the total amount of $8006.11 were
approved and ordered paid to the following suppliers:

Permission is hereby granted to Rene DeVolder of the South Bend Police Department to
attend the Mental Health Convention in Indianapolis on September 169 17, 18, and 19,
1959.
Comes Now Sgt. Harman of the South Bend Police Department and requests annual military
leave from the 14th day of September, 1959 through the 28th day of September, 1959 at
Bunker Hill Air Force Base at Peru, Indiana. Permission granted.
Comes now Rev. Bowles reference to the structures located at 215 and 203 South Kentucky
Street and submits a request to the Board for permission to rebuild said structures in
conformance with the Building Bode of the City of South Bend. Permission granted and
Rev. Bowles is given sixty (60) days to complete this matter to conform with the list
of repairs as set out in a letter from the City Building Department. Further, if this
order is not complied with in the 60 day period, then the Building Department is di-
rected to demolish said dwellings forthwith.
The time now being after 10:00 A.M. it was so announced and the bids for the South Bend
Police Department are now opened and read aloud. Proofs of publication in.the South Bend
Tribune with an affidavit signed by Robert DeLong and in The Record with an affidavit
signed by Ruby McMahon were submitted to the Board and found sufficient. The bids re-
ceived read as follows:
