July 13, 1959
A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works & Safety was held on Monday, July 13,
1959 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the previous regular meet-
ing were read and approved. Claims in the total amount of $7434.85 were approved and
ordered paid to the following suppliers:

Comes now Verner Lane and informs the Board that several complaints have received in
his office reference to smoke nuisance. -,at the Curtiss Wright Corp. The Board hereby
authorizes Mr. Lane to proceed to correct this matter. Also, Mr. Lane informs the
Board that several merchants on S. Michigan Street have been selling merchandise on
the street and sidewalk. Therefore, the Board further authorizes Mr. Lane to contact
Norman Kopec in the City Attorney's office and also the Police Department to assist
him in this matter.
Permission is granted to the Fire Chief to attend a conference in Middleboro, Mass.
on Monday, July 20 thru July 25, 1959.
Special police application is approved for Raymond Dabrowiak.
Applications for the Fire Department are examined and placed on file for Robert Grie-
singer and Kenneth Hill.

Permission is granted to Officer Marvin Martz for a military leave from Aug. 1 to Aug.16
for reserve training in North Carolina. Said Martz will return to duty on August 17, 1959.
Comes new Bert S. Cichowicz, City Sealer of the Weights & Measures Division and submits
the annual report of July 1, 1959 to June 30, 1959 for the City. Accepted and placed on
file. Also, submitted at this time and placed on file is the monthly report for same to
cover June, 1959.
Permission is granted to Lt. Carroll I. Parfitt, Executive Director, of the Civil
Defense department to attend the United States Civil Defense Region 4 Conference to
be held on Friday. and Saturday, July 24 and July 25, 1959, at Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Lt. Carroll Parfitt, Executive Director, of the Civil Defense Department now informs
the Board that he will be on vacation from July 16, 1959 to August 5, 1959 inclusive.
Woodrow M. McDaniel will be acting in Lt. Parfitt's capacity during his absence.

Nicholas Horvath, Superintendent of the Electrical Department, recommends installation
of the following street lights:
4000 lumen light at 517 E. Haney Avenue
4000 lumen light at Rockne Drive and Northwood
4000 lumen light at Churchill Drive and Cavanaugh Drive
4000 lumen light at Churchill Drive and Gartner Drive
Remove 1000 lumen light at Rockne Drive and Bader Avenue and
install a 4000 lumen light.
The. -Board approves Mr. Horvath's recommendation and directed said department to proceed
with installation.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was called ad-
journed at 10:35 A.M.
