A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, June 179
1957 at 10:00 A.M. (DST)* All members were present. Minutes of the previous
regular meeting were read and approved. Claims of the following suppliers in
the total amount of $41,702.26 were approved and ordered paid:

Police Chief Dutrieux appeared before the Board requesting permission to attend
the Indiana Association of Police Chief's Convention to the held in Bloomington,
Indiana on June 19, 20, 21, and 229 1957. Permission granted.
This being the date set, hearing was held on charges against Officer Leonard
Brooks, Jr., 1711 Longley Avenue, South Bend, Indiana in violation of Rules
5, 159 and 20 of the Rules and Regulations of the South Bend Police Department.
Charges regarding same were filed in the office of the Board of Public Works &
Safety on June 13, 1957. Notice of said hearing to be held at 10:00 A.M. (DST)
on June 179 1957 before the Board of Public Works and Safety was served upon by
Leonard Brooks, Jr. personally and Sgt. Nicholas, #129 served the same on Leonard
Brooks, Jr. personally on the 13th day of June, 1957.
Leonard Brooks, Jr. having appeared before the Board of .Public Works and Safety
on this 17th day of June, 1957 admits that he is in violation of Rule #52 in
that he did not report for duty.
Leonard Brooks, Jr. -admits that on the llth day of June, 1957 he reported to the
office of `the Chief of Police without arms, in violation of Rule #15.
Leonard Brooks, Jr. admits that on the loth day of June, 1957 he reported to the
Police Surgeon, William J. Stogdill, M.D., and said surgeon -ordered said Leonard
Brooks to report for duty on the loth day of June, 1957 and said Leonard Brooks
failed to obey said order, all in violation of Rule #20.
Said Officer having pleaded guilty to the charges against him, the Board now makes
the following finding:
That Leonard Brooks, Jr. shall be suspended from the duties
of the South Bend Police Department, effective as of June 10,
19579 for a period of sixty (60) days and also said Brooks
will be required to pay of fine ;of two -hundred ($200.00) dollars
to be deducted from his salary after his return to police duty.
And further, if any infractions or violations of the Rules and
Regulations of the Police Department by said Leonard Brooks, Jr.
are brought back before the Board again, said Brooks would be
permanently suspended from the South Bend Police Department.
Copy of charges on file in the office of the Board of Public Works and Safety.
The Board of Public Safety examined the directive issued by City Judge, Edward
Olczak, referring to bail. Directive is hereby referred to Police Department
with instructions to follow as noted on said directive.
There being no further business to cone before the Board, the meeting was adjourned
at 10:45 A.M. (DST).
