A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday,
November 16, 1964 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes
of the last regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were
approved and ordered paid to the various suppliers.

Cons now Mr. Walter Muday of Shippers' Dispatch to complain to the Board
about South Bend -Baling Company burning junked auto bodies in their yard
which is adjacent to the new terminal building of Shipers' Dispatch,
Mr. Muday advised the Board that the sparks from these Large fires
are carried to the Shippers' Dispatch premises and there is great
danger of damage to their loaded trucks which are covered with either
plastic or canvas tarpaulins. Mr. Muday further advised the Board
that there have been numerous fires at South Band Baling in 1964 and
that the Fire Department has been called out many tames to extinguish
these fares. This is in violation to a City Ordinance, according to
Mr. Muday.
Mr. Muday requested relief from this hazard before Shippers' Dispatch
moods into the new terminal in the near future. Mr. Muday also advised
the Board that he had brought this matter to the attention of the Fire
Department and that the Fire Department personnel had agreed that this
condition was a hazard.
Fire Chief McHenry, who was present at the Board meeting, advised the
Board that South Bend Baling had been operating in violation to the
City Ordinance on burning of junk auto bodies and that such continued
burning would constitute a hazard to the Shippers' Dispatch trucks.
After hearing all who wished to be heard, the Board ruled that it
will investigate this complaint and take action if South Bend Baling
is in violation of a City Ordinance.
PETITION: STREET LIGHT
A Petition from residents of the 2100 and 2200 blocks of S. Chapin
Street was submitted to the Board requesting the installation of a
street light on Chapin Street between Donald Street and Ewing Avenue.
The Petition was referred to the Electrical Department for investigation
and recommendation.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS
Street Light Outage Reports were accepted and ordered placed on file.
SPECIAL POLICE C%LIISSION AND BOND
A Special Police Commission and Bond for Walter Dill , employed by the
Progress Club as Custodian were approved by the Board and ordered placed
on f ale .
SPECIAL POLICE BOND - SOUTH BEND TRIBUNE EMPLOYEES
A Special Police Bond covering Special Police employed by the South Bend
Tribune was approved and ordered placed on file.
The employees covered are: Albert Jackson Dunkel, Karl F. Krienke, Boyd
Jimerson and Frank J. Wolfinger.

Mitchem was promoted by the Board to the rank of Detective Sergeant.,
effective November 16, 1964.

The Board appro, ved the use of Fire Station . S as a depository for decorated
boxes for the collection of gifts for mental patients. Regular pick -UPS
will be made�by the Transportation Chairman of the Mental Health Association.
The campaign will be completed by November 28, 1964.

Comes now John Grabarz of the Sub -Standard Division of the Building
Department and requested permission to withhold the opening of bids
for demolition of premises located at 313 N. Scott Street due to the
fact that there is insufficient funds in this budget.
Transfer of funds will be requested,*' Request to hold bids granted.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
was adjourned at 11:00 A.M.
